We'll take any good news we can get this summer and although the weekend was down another 12% from last year, Universal's "Lucy" was a pleasant surprise, debuting with an impressive $44 million take, with Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" not far back at $29 million.

"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" ruled the box office for the second consecutive weekend as it demolished its way to $53.8 million for the weekend, bringing its overall cume to $174 million. The pic easily outdistanced Warners' "Tammy", which opened to $32.9 million for the five days.

I will admit to being rather perplexed by "Transformers: Age of Extinction". It has all the street cred of a big summer tentpole...Michael Bay, a bankable star in Mark Wahlberg, great special effects and a built in audience. Yet it appears that the film won't crack the $100 barrier as the film's Thursday night shows totaled $8.8 million.
