"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" crossed the $400 million barrier this weekend with an enormous $95.8 million take, crushing the competition yet again. The film easily outdistanced two family titles, "How To Train Your Dragon 2" and "Maleficent".

There's nothing like an opening in China to allow you to reclaim the top spot overseas and nothing like 11 guys falling down as if shot when breathed on (are you listening, Germany?) to keep guys away from International multiplexes. That translates to family oriented films finishing 1-2 this weekend.

It's probably better to look at the end rather than the means in the case of "The Fault In Our Stars" this weekend. The end result was a stunning $48.2 million weekend, easily outpacing the competition as tween and older females flocked to the multiplex as if an episode of Oprah's Favorite Things was taping.

Look for females to find no "Fault In Our Stars" this weekend as the tween rom/drama seeks to expand past its core 12-20 year old demographic and lure older women into the multiplex. If they can pull off that feat then first place is a given as "Maleficent" and "Edge Of Tomorrow" will have to settle for second and third.

There are usually one or two executives at every studio whose main job it is to attempt to work with the MPAA ratings board to nip here or tuck there to achieve a desired rating for each film. Kudos to whoever that person is at Disney for securing a PG rating for "Maleficent"!

In the penultimate week prior to the start of the World Cup, Disney's "Maleficent" edged out Fox's "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" to top the overseas box office. The Angelina Jolie film took in a nice round number of $100 million while the X-Men gang was a close second at $95 million.

Final studio numbers have come in this morning and a decent Saturday pushes Angelina Jolie and "Maleficent" to $70 million for the weekend. Sadly, Saturday wasn't much of a help for "A Million Ways To Die In The West" as the Seth MacFarlane comedy western remains at $17 million and a third place finish.

I'm still waiting for several estimates to come in but it's all Disney and Angelina Jolie at the box office this weekend. Driven by its family friendly PG rating and a large take from its Imax screens, "Maleficent" easily cruised into first place this weekend, grossing an estimated $68-71 million.
