THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2--SONY--WIDE--130 MINS--PG-13--IMAX, 3D, REAL D, D-BOX
With great power comes great responsibility. In this case the responsibility lies with Andrew Garfield and Co. overtaking "Captain America" as the year's highest opening three day gross. The entire cast of the first Spidey reboot is back, save for Dennis Leary who sadly met his maker in the first installment, and Jamie Foxx has been added as the villain Electro. Peter Parker's friend-turned-enemy Harry Osborn/ The Green Goblin is now played by Dane DaHaan, taking over for the original trilogy's James Franco..
Letss get one thing out of the way right now...attempting to base a projection for this second installment of the reboot off the first is like, as someone I know was fond of saying, comparing apples to sofas, as "ASM 1" opened on a Tuesday so the Fri-Sat-Sun total of $62 million is greatly skewed. The opening six days for the film was $137 million. Also, Spidey's long range prospects are strong as the film has a surprisingly wide open next couple of weeks with only some Japanese lizard in its path until we get to the latest "X-Men" offering on the 23rd.
Tracking is huge, the overseas numbers, except for some reason for Australia, are very strong, and its Rotten Tomatoes score currently stands at 72%. Also, the film is available in every dimension and format known to mankind (look for a healthy share of the grosses from the Imax screens). What does this all add up to? Here's predicting that "ASM2" swings past "Captain America" and into triple digits.
