All Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne wanted was a house to call their own. A white picket fence, a nice backyard, a garden gnome and suburban peace and quiet. Ahhhh. What they got was Zac Efron and his band of fraternity nitwits in the new comedy, "Neighbors". "The Other Woman" showed that moviegoers need to laugh after having endured four grueling months of repeat viewings of "Frozen", young adult melodramas and "I Frankenstein" (not in that order). Director Nicholas Stoller has been responsible for two of the funniest comedies of the past ten years in "Get Him To The Greek" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" but was also at the helm of the bitterly disappointing "Five Year Engagement". What is especially encouraging is that the film's Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 89. Opening weekends on both "Greek" and "Sarah" were an almost identical $17 million. Here's figuring that this is the place and time for a good R rated comedy.
JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $ 36 million

MOMS' NIGHT OUT--SONY/TRI-STAR---1,100 RUNS--98--PG
And here we have the latest stop on the Faith Based Film World Tour 2014. Success with these types of films relies upon a relatable story and this comedy about a group of moms looking for a little fun away from their everyday lives, would seem primed to fit the bill. "Grey's Anatomy" star Sarah Drew, Patricia Heaton, Sean Astin, Alex Kendrick (the star of Faith Based hits "Courageous" and "Fireproof") and Trace Adkins star in this sweet offering directed by the Erwin Brothers who helmed 2012's "October Baby" which was a hit in Christian circles. It's so hard to predict these kind of films, especially with Sony only releasing the film in 1,100 locations. "God's Not Dead" opened to $9.2 million on 780 screens its opening weekend. I guess we'll use that as a benchmark, and hey it's Mother's Day so that's got to help, right?
JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $ 7 million

LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN---CLARIUS---WIDE--88 MINS--PG--3D
Somewhere over the rainbow, someone knows why this film was made. Perhaps someone wanted to do a better job of furthering Dorothy's legend than the disaster that was 1985's "Return To Oz", starring poor defenseless Fairuza Balk. In any case, Will Finn, the director of "Home on the Range" and "Road To El Dorado", co-directs "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return", featuring the voices of Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi and Kelsey Grammer. There's almost no buzz on this film but I suppose it may make a couple of bucks from families desperate to not have to see "Frozen" again or dads looking for a way to occupy 2 year-olds while their wives are at Moms' Night Out
JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $5 million
