"Transformers" Settles Into $100 Million Weekend, "22 Jump Street" Claims #2 Position

"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" is currently perched atop the $100 million rock and how the film holds up today will determine whether it can stay there. They may lose the Latino audience who will be glued to TV sets for the Mexico-Netherlands match but in any event it's a powerful opening for Paramount.

"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" is currently perched atop the $100 million rock and how the film holds up today will determine whether it can stay there. The Imax runs were a success as the film scored the second highest Imax gross of the year ($10.7 million vs. the $13.5 million from "Captain America: Winter Soldier:).  They may lose the Latino audience who will be glued to their TV sets for the Mexico-Netherlands match today.  It's a solid but not spectacular opening for Paramount but the film's A- Cinemascore (is every film this summer receiving that grade?) will help counteract that both today and in the coming days but this looks to be the best shot the industry has of anything reaching that elusive $100 million plateau unless something pulls a stunner.  It's a sad state of affairs when we're scrambling for ONE film to break the century mark in a summer.  Summer 2015 looks like it'll be chock full of them but that doesn't help now.  We're currently down from 2013 and I can't imagine that trend stabilizing, looking at the rest of the summer and the fall.

Elsewhere Sony had a good news-bad news weekend.  The good news is that "22 Jump Street" continues to hold in well, garnering $15.4 million and upping its total to a lofty $139 million, passing the overall gross of the first outing.  The bad news is that Kevin Hart lost his audience in his second week as "Think Like A Man Too" fell an eye opening 64%.  In addition, "Maleficent" passed the $200 million level, "Jersey Boys" fell 43% which is not good news for the film, and "Chef" continues its nice little run, falling a minuscule 3% despite losing 100+ theatres this weekend.

Without further ado here are the weekend studio estimates.

2)   22 JUMP STREET--SONY---$15.4 MILLION---43% DROP---$139 CUME
