Will Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan, Have A Bond-ing Experience With Moviegoers This Week? And Will 'As Above, So Below" Rise Top The Top of the Labor Day Heap?

If you thought last weekend at the box office was a bit light, just wait a few more days. Universal's "As Above, So Below" and Relativity's "November Man" are the lone wide openers but will either dethrone the Guardians, or even the Turtles for that matter?

The November Man

Woe is us.  Kids and moviegoers hate late summer as the approaching Labor Day weekend for the tots means it's back-to-school time and for movie fans it's a time of tumbleweeds blowing through their 16-plexes.  But alas, we remain hopeful so let's take a look at this week's previews and predictions

As above, So Below

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW---UNIVERSAL---WIDE---93 MINS---R
Let's get one thing out of the way.  Whatever this film ends up grossing at the box office it is bound to forever hold a place in our hearts along with the other Top 10 Worst Movie Titles Of All Time, alongside such notables as "The Constant Gardener", "A Scanner Darkly", "What Dreams May Come" and the unforgettable "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger".  This horror/thriller set in the underground catacombs of Paris has a cast of newcomers and is directed by John Erick Dowdle, whose most recent outing was 2008's "Quarantine", which ended up grossing $31 million.  TV spots have been few and far between (at least from what we've seen) but social media buzz, after a you-can-hear-a-pin-drop start, has picked up as of late.  If we're being optimistic then we should point out that 2012's "The Possession" opened Labor Day weekend to the tune of $21 million. One thing is for certain, whatever the film opens to, it'll be star Perdita Weeks' biggest opening ever.  So that's something.

BOX OFFICE INSIDER'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $12 MILLION

CAST: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman
DIRECTOR:  John Erick Dowdle ("Quarantine")
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS:  8:00 PM

November Man

THE NOVEMBER MAN---RELATIVITY---WIDE---OPENS WEDNESDAY---108 MINS---R
If you're a regular reader of this blog you know that we here at Box Office Insider have our acting faves.  Whatever Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg or Kate Beckinsale are in is okay with us.  Near the top of that list is Pierce Brosnan, who's back in full force with "The November Man", in which he plays an ex-CIA assassin who is brought back to track down an ex-pupil, played by Luke Bracey (who'll next be seen as Johnny Utah in 2015's recharge of "Point Break").   Oh and did we mention ex-Bond girl Olga Kurylenko?  Yes, she's along for the high octane ride as well.  Director Roger Donaldson has an esteemed track record, with films such as "No Way Out", "The Recruit", "The Bank Job" and the Brosnan-led "Dante's Peak" on his resume.  Relativity's ad campaign has been excellent and the film feels like the kind of fun ride that moviegoers are looking for to close out summer.  The Wednesday opening will temper the film's three day weekend total but it's a smart move by the Boys From Beverly Hills to take advantage of the remaining summer midweeks.

BOX OFFICE INSIDER'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $13 MILLION (5 DAYS), $9 MILLION (3 DAYS)

CAST: Pierce Brosnan, Luke Bracey, Olga Kurylenko, Will Patton
DIRECTOR: Roger Donaldson ("No Way Out", "The Bank Job", "The Recruit")
TUESDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS:  NONE

Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary

OTHER NOTABLE RELEASES
GHOSTBUSTERS 30TH ANNIV---SONY---500 RUNS
Hoping that moviegoers will want to get slimed one more time, Sony is re-releasing the classic 1984 comedy "Ghostbusters" in theatres for its 30th anniversary.  The film has always had a special place in my cinematic heart as it was the first big movie I sold when I was a sales trainee in Boston for Columbia Pictures.  We had a summer of "Ghostbusters" and then "The Karate Kid" and I thought, "wow, this selling thing is easy".  Then came "Sheena, Queen of the Jungle", "The Razor's Edge" and "Starman".  Needless to say, that fall was my introduction to pleading and begging.

BOX OFFICE INSIDER'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $ 2 MILLION

Cantinflas

CANTINFLAS---PANTELION/LIONSGATE---350 RUNS
We did an in depth preview of the film in our look at indie releases this week but just to recap, Pantelion goes after the Latino audience with the biopic of legendary Mexican actor/comic Mario Moreno, better known to the world as Cantinflas.  The actor was the biggest star in Mexico throughout the 40's and 50's and came to Hollywood late in the 50's where he was most famous for his role as Passepartout in 1956's Best Picture winner, "Around The World In 80 Days".  Oscar Jaenada portrays Cantinflas and the film is produced by "The Sopranos" actor Michael Imperioli.

BOX OFFICE INSIDER'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $1.5 MILLION
