Will "Turtles" Overtake Rocket Raccoon? Do Moviegoers Want to Go "Into The Storm"? And All Aboard For The "Hundred-Foot Journey" This Week's Predictions and Previews

Box Office Insider By Jim Amos | Box Office Insider August 4, 2014 at 1:09PM

Turtles looking to unseat a rambunctious raccoon sounds like something from Animal Planet" but no, it's this weekend at the box office. Paramount's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" return to the big screen and do battle against the holdover of the reigning box office champion "Guardians of the Galaxy"

TMNT

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES---PARAMOUNT---WIDE---101 MINS---PG-13---3D, D-BOX
After a 21 year absence, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" return to the big screen, this time with honest-to-goodness special effects and a screenwriter in Andre Nemec who was responsible for such films as "Mission:Impossible-Ghost Protocol", "Alias" and the upcoming "Beverly Hills Cop" redo.  Oh and did we mention that Megan Fox is in it?  We didn't?  Ok well she is.  The turtles are called upon to save New York City from the evil Foot Clan, led by Doctor Scholls, no wait, led by the dastardly Shredder (apologies for the confusion).  The previous three TMNT movies all opened between $12-15 million (but remember, that's in 1990-1993 dollars) with the first topping out at $135 million but the next two dropped to $78 million and $42 million respectively.  The recharge, led by director Jonathan Liebesman, looks like it will work but I am tempering my predictions due to the massive success of "Guardians of the Galaxy"

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $32 MILLION

CAST: Megan Fox, Will Arnett, voices of Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub
DIRECTOR: Jonathan Liebesman ("Wrath of the Titans", "Battle L.A.", "Darkness Falls")
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 7:00 PM

Into the Storm

INTO THE STORM---WARNER BROTHERS--WIDE---89 MINS---PG-13
For anyone who wished they'd make another "Twister" movie, but this time without Helen Hunt, director Steven Quale invites us to go "Into The Storm" as multiple tornadoes touch down in the peaceful little town of Silverton.  Quayle was assistant director on "Avatar" and helmed "Final Destination 5" and I would go on and on about the film's stars but honestly I really can't place any of them and besides, the SFX department probably should get top billing anyway.

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $14 MILLION

CAST:  Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sumpter
DIRECTOR: Steven Quale
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 8:00 PM

Hundred Foot Journey

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY---BUENA VISTA---2,000+ RUNS---122 MINS---PG
Let's face it, Helen Mirren can do no wrong (except perhaps for that whatever-were-you-thinking turn in "Arthur") so expectations are high for this story of a French restauranteur (restauranteuse?) who must deal with an Indian family who literally sets up shop across the street from her 5 star French eatery.  Bigotry and stereotyping recede with each tikka and samosa dish that's prepared (Arclight has already begun a "Hundred-Foot Journey" flavored menu-see accompanying pic) and theatres like Ipic could break house records.  There's always one summer adult film that emerges from the pack and this could very well be it.  Oh and by the way, the great Lasse Hallstrom comes along to direct.

Hundred-Foot Journey Menu

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $10 MILLION

CAST: Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal
DIRECTOR: Lasse Hallstrom
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 7:00 PM

Step Up: All In

STEP UP: ALL IN---LIONSGATE---2,000+ RUNS---112 MINS---PG-13--3D
If you need an answer to the musical question "why did they make another "Step Up" movie" then savor this Fun Fact To Know And Tell...the last movie in the series, "Step Up: Revolution", grossed...ready for this?...$105 million overseas.  On these shores the film opened to $11 million on its way to $35 million.  Yawn.  There's nothing to suggest that this time around the franchise will receive a kick start and the initial international openings on SUAI have been middling.

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $6 MILLION

CAST: Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan
DIRECTOR: Trish Sie
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 8:00 PM

what if

THIS WEEK'S LIMITED TITLES AND EXPANSIONS
CBS, well whoever is left at CBS, opens the romantic dramedy "What If" with Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan from director Michael Dowse, the helmer responsible for two terrific movies, "It's All Gone Pete Tong" and "Goon".   In addition there are expansions on IFC's "Boyhood" (up to 500 runs) and "Calvary" (8 markets plus expansions in NY & LA).  "Magic in the Moonlight"'s expansion is next week.

On the Bollywood side, Akshay Kumar is here to provide "Entertainment" in what should be a mid-range, at best, Indian title.
