Woody Allen and Philip Seymour Hoffman Highlight This Week's Indie Releases

The amazingly prolific filmmaker Woody Allen highlights this week's indie releases as his latest offering, "Magic in the Moonlight" debuts on Friday. The film, which stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone probably won't crossover into multiplexes the way "Blue Jasmine" did but it seems like a pleasant enough diversion.

Happy Christmas

HAPPY CHRISTMAS---MAGNOLIA
This Anna Kendrick, Lena Dunham dramedy is already out on VOD and will begin its theatrical runs in select locations starting Friday.

BOYHOOD EXPANSION---IFC
The art house hit of the year, "Boyhood" expands into the top 25 markets this week.

I ORIGINS---FOX SEARCHLIGHT
Coming off a respectable limited opening, Mike Cahill's "I Origins" exapnds into the top 18 markets along with a further expansion in New York and Los Angeles, which will increase the film's location count to 70 theatres.

KICK---UTV
The first major Bollywood release since the start of the World Cup, "Kick" features India's bad boy Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez.  Khan's last three films have all been box office successes with January's "Jai Ho" opening to $1.2 million, December 2012's "Dabangg 2" debuting at $1.0 million and August 2012's "Ek Tha Tiger" starting off its run with $1.1 million.  Expect more of the same this time around with the possibility of a weekend total slightly north of those, considering that we haven't had a major Bollywood release since mid June.
