It's a Tale Of Two Studios this morning as Sony's "Heaven Is For Real" is off to a truly heavenly start, with a three day estimate of almost $20 million and $27 million for the five day, close to my prediction. The film, as expected was huge in the heartland and proves that, at least for the time being, faith based films are still on a roll.
I, in addition to every single other person on the planet, couldn't have imagined a three day opening for "Transcendence" that struggles to break into double digits. Yet, the Johnny Depp starrer looks to come in fourth for the weekend at a mere $11 million. Yes $11 million. Not a Good Friday at Warners.
"Captain America: Winter Solider", with a strong hold, and "Rio 2" will battle for the box office title, with each looking at between $23-25 million.
The other new openings didn't fare particularly well either. Open Road will hopefully get to $10 million for the three days on "A Haunted House" and Disney's "Bears" did half of their previous Earth Day weekend offering, "Chimpanzee" coming it at lackluster $5 million.
Full estimates tomorrow morning.
