Just when it looked like Viola Davis was going to zoom straight through to the Best Actress Oscar, Meryl Streep won the BAFTA for The Iron Lady. Well, she was playing Margaret Thatcher and they are the British Academy Film Awards, so who knows if her victory means anything for the Oscars, but never mind that. While Davis has emerged as the queen of the stirring acceptance speech, Streep has been the wonderfully zany winner, and last night was one of her best appearances.

First, she forgot to leave her purse behind when she left her seat, so tossed it to Shailene Woodley from The Descendants; Woodley wasn’t sitting with Streep, she just happened to be there.

Then  Streep stepped out of her shoe while climbing to the stage and kept walking, so  -- as if we need more proof that Colin Firth is Prince Charming – he rescued the shoe and put it on her foot with all the elan a Cinderella could want.

Here’s her Cinderella moment with Firth, starting at 3:30 in if you want to dash ahead

BAFTA is sometimes maddeningly erratic about its videos, so you can also find it here.
