Whether Mary and Matthew got together or not, there was no bad way for the Downton Abbey season to end. If you missed last night’s finale or want to relive the Christmas holidays with the Granthams, for the next two weeks you can watch it online here. (If you haven’t watched and want to be surprised, skip to the video and don’t read more until you do!)
In a snowy moment on the terrace, Matthew finally asked Mary to marry him and got the answer he wanted. That would have been a perfectly satisfying conclusion to the entire series, but we can also guess that it sets us up beautifully for a wedding in season 3. Although ... much as I was pulling for them to get together, I was also looking forward to Mary in America, staying with her Granny (Shirley Maclaine) in a situation perfect for a tussle between Old New York society and the Modern Age. As long as there was a season 3 coming, there could hardly have been a wrong move.
There are other questions hanging. Bates has escaped the death penalty for his wife’s murder, but will he successfully appeal and get his freedom? One thing is reassuring: now that everyone gets to stay at Downton, the indispensable Carson isn’t going anywhere either.
Here’s the episode in all its romantic glory. This is chapter one; follow the Masterpece link to watch the others.
