Love can save your life; that’s the message of The Adjustment Bureau. But it’s Matt Damon and Emily Blunt who save the film, turning it from the overloaded political sci-fi romantic thriller it might have been into a breezy, charming love story. In the old Hollywood days, what the actors have together would have been called chemistry; they have the irresistible ease and appeal of classic movie couples.

The Oprah Winfrey Show did its annual post-Oscar program today, dragging sleep-deprived winners from Colin Firth to Melissa Leo back onto the stage of the Kodak Theater for one more interview. Maybe they think of it as gradual withdrawal from the frenzy of campaigining.

Idea for a sci-fi movie: the villain sneaks a drug into the air at the Oscars so that almost everybody seems a little bit stoned . . . or, wait, did that really happen?

If you're a celebrity trying to convince the world that you're not a whack-job, out of control on drugs (and that's even before getting around to the anti-Semitic attacks on your boss), it's not a good idea to start by giving a lengthy interview to ABC, which heavily promoted its exclusive, then undermine the network by giving an interview to NBC too. But Charlie Sheen has much bigger personal and pr problems than that.

Whatever you think of Eliot Spitzer - and frankly I’d take smart, Clinton-Spitzer sex-challenged politicians over idiot politicians any day - he’s good on television. He’s an incisive, challenging interviewer; he’s politically opinionated but not bullying, and always listens to the other side.

Even when the hosts are unpredictable - James Franco is an original; Anne Hathaway not so much, but she can be surprising – the Oscar show follows a predictable pattern. There’s a very funny opening routine, some early awards excitement, then a slog as people you don’t care about thank their agents, you wonder where the hosts have gone, you look at the clock and can’t believe this interminable show is only halfway through. Will it ever change? Probably not, but we can get smarter about it.
