Jon Stewart takes on the absurdity of Lowe’s dropping out as a sponsor of TLC’s reality series All-American Muslim, in a segment that skewered TLC’s own icky Toddlers and Tiaras, as well as the lunacy of social critics who complained that the people on All-Amercan Muslim weren’t depicted as terrorists. He then turned things over to Asif Mandvi, “Senior Muslim Correspondent,” who pointed out the great deals on terrorist supplies at Lowe’s, with prices so good,  “You can’t afford not to blow something up.”

“I adore you, Margaret, and I adore our family,” Nucky says as he finally proposes marriage in the season finale of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Of course, he needs her to be his wife so she can’t be forced to testify against him, but still --- nothing is more important than family, especially if there’s a crime family to keep organized, alive and out of prison.

Andy Samberg and Katy Perry were prancing around New York singing carols and doing other wholesomely silly holiday things when they picked up a new best friend, a homeless addict played by Matt Damon as a guy with bad teeth and an odor you could almost smell through the television.  Val Kilmer turns up, too. as a mad scientist, but somehow that isn’t such a stretch.

The reviews of New Year’s Eve make it sound like the end of the world, so it’s a quick step from there to SNL’s parody, a sequel in which thousands of stars collide on one very special night: Apocalypse.

Colin Firth signed on for his role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy long before winning his Oscar for The King’s Speech. Even so, it’s a little jolting to find him in a relatively small role as one of a half-dozen British intelligence agents and possible moles being investigated by George Smiley (Gary Oldman, the film’s center of gravity). But Firth gives a typically shining and sly performance as the dapper Bill Haydon, ever-so-much more sophisticated than his drab colleagues. And if casting is destiny, this teasing film makes you wonder: is there some big payoff coming for his character or is he the ultimate red herring?

Whether you can’t wait to see Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or are really tired of all those teasing Rooney Mara photos (just release the film already) here’s a great temporary substitute: Emma Roberts and Joe Manganiello (Alcide the werewolf from True Blood) in Girl With the Tramp Stamp Tattoo.

How do you take a 1974 spy novel, already famous as a 1979 miniseries, and make it new without changing the setting? The key to Tomas Alfredson’s fresh take on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is Gary Oldman’s powerfully solid yet edgy performance as George Smiley, the British intelligence agent forced into retirement, only to be brought back to hunt down a mole in his own service.

No one wants to sympathize with a serial killer, yet real life has shown us how often they charm their victims. Dominic West eerily walks that line between seductive and repellent in Sundance Channel’s sharp psychological thriller Appropriate Adult (a film premiering Saturday at 10 PM ET). West plays the real-life Fred West (happily for him, no relation) who tortured and killed at least a dozen women over more than a decade, including one of his own daughters. Sometimes he had an accomplice – his wife.

Alec Baldwin is one of the best SNL hosts, and he brought some of that sketch style to Conan last night.

If you want to see Steve Buscemi at his recent best, don’t miss him as the strangely sympathetic and charismatic crooked politician Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire. (Preview tonight's tense, next-to-last episode of the season here.) But he had some good moments hosting SNL last night, in sketches that were more of a throwback to the weird-guy roles he has built his career on.
