I did not have great hopes for the Oscar show going in -- I'm not even an Ellen fan -- but you cannot hate anything that has Brad Pitt passing around pizza and John Travolta creating an entirely new name for the person he was introducing (Adele Dazeem, a star is born).

'World War Z': Deja Vu, Plus Brad PItt and Zombies

Brad Pitt chasing zombies should not be boring to watch, especially if you like Brad Pitt, which I do, and zombies, which I'm perfectly OK with. Improbable though it sounds, Marc Forster's World War Z is dull and pretty easy to dislike, partly because it so slavishly follows the tired and increasingly tiresome formula of summer action movies: family in danger, hero springs into action, then we're all bludgeoned with an hour of uninspired special effects.

The Little Jolie-Pitts' Dad Is A Lethal Weapon In 'Killing Them Softly'

If you need proof that casting is everything, Killing Them Softly delivers it. This noirish crime story about hired killers would be an entirely different, less enjoyable film without Brad Pitt as an expert hitman. I’d say he’s working against type, but really, isn’t his type these days Mr. Dad-of-Six-Little-Jolie-Pitts, with a side of philanthropy? Or the guy talking mumbo-jumbo on those Chanel ads? Any fictional character is likely to be different from that. Still, good-guy Pitt as a walking, talking lethal weapon is a pretty good joke for a film to start with.

The Real Brad Pitt Chanel Ad Vs. SNL's: Can You Tell the Difference?

Just try to tell them apart. Brad Pitt’s recently unveiled commercial for Chanel No. 5 is so loaded with high-flown, nonsensical language that it out-parodies itself without any help from satirists. But SNL’s Taram Killam offers a very funny take on the commercial anyway, which includes Pitt saying to the off-screen director: “You want me to sound less coherent? Really?” Now that would explain a lot.

If you’re a fan of Billy Crystal and nostalgia (they sort of go together, don’t they?) tonight’s Academy Awards show has your name on it. But if, like many more of us, the throwback to Oscar hosts past and the presumed dominance of The Artist sounds like a snooze, here are some ways to approach the Academy Awards. (To be fair, the photo above is from this year's Oscar promo.)

This could be the Red Carpet for people who hate The Red Carpet: Miss Piggy is the hostess for the BAFTA arrivals Sunday, asking the urgent questions about clothes, jewels, dates (“Who are you with, Georgie? Why not moi?”) and we can only guess what else.

Clooney vs. Dujardin: Can Subtlety Ever Win The Best Actor Oscar?

The Oscar for best Actor doesn't usually reward subtlety. Look at the past two years: Colin Firth won last time around for his stuttery role in The King’s Speech, while the year before his infinitely more nuanced and better performance in A Single Man lost to Jeff Bridges’ roaring drunk country singer in Crazy Heart. You get the picture: the Academy voters’ motto is We Love Big Gestures.

Brad Pitt knows he doesn’t have much of a chance to win the Oscar this year. He actually says so during this campaign stop on The Daily Show last night.

We could stretch it to more than four, but let’s stay focused. All ears, of course, will be on Ricky Gervais, as we wonder what he can possibly do to top his hilarious, irreverent turn as host last year. The first five minutes should tell.
