Now down to its final episodes, Breaking Bad gets darker, wilder, more go-for-broke. The lighter side? That would be Joking Bad, the latest pop-cult parody from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Argo places us so much in the middle of the furious crowd storming the American Embassy in Tehran -- and the captives inside who see it coming -- that the episode is viscerally frightening. Back home, the Hollywood players who create a fake movie as a cover for the CIA rescue mission of Americans is full of hilarious lines sending up the movie business. One of the wonders of Ben Affleck’s extremely entertaining film is how easily he shifts from the threatening to the comic, keeping a steady balance.

Jimmy Kimmel was a perfectly smooth host for the Emmys, though not a perfect fit. One of his trademarks, prankish humor – he asked viewers to Tweet that Tracy Morgan had passed out – didn’t translate to an awards show. His other trademark, irreverently taking swipes at the self-importance of show busines, was oddly missing. That was left to a few clever nominees. What worked best were the pre-arranged comic bits by winners and the people they beat. Julia Louis-Dreyfus read an acceptance speech Amy Poehler had supposedly slipped into her hand (that piece of paper was too big and crumpled to be anything other than a prop). Even better, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert wrestled Jon Stewart to the ground to keep him from heading to the stage when The Daily Show won Best Variety show.

The best part of the Emmy nominations? Jimmy Kimmel appearing in his pj’s, speaking truth to power. “This could be just as good at noon, really,” he said at the insane hour of 5:40 AM Pacific time. Kimmel, who will host the awards show on Sept 23., stepped in to announce the nominations with Kerry Washington when Nick Offerman was delayed in the East because of yesterday’s monster storm. And he went straight to an even more cogent point in an interview with GMA after the nominations.

Where do you go after you’ve blown off the face of your rival, the area’s biggest meth-lord? Really blown off his face, the way Walter White (Bryan Cranston) did at the end of last season’s 'Breaking Bad,' when he set a bomb and lured Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) to visit a supposed old rat in an assisted living community, so that Fring lurched out of the room like one of the zombies from 'The Walking Dead,' half his face a bloody red mask over a skeleton?  As you may have been reminded by teasers for the new season (which begins Sunday on AMC) Fring had threatened Walt with, “I will kill your infant daughter,”  so if anyone had it coming . . .
