'Edge of Tomorrow', or 'Groundhog Day Meets Alien,' is relatively good -- that is, relative to Tom Cruise's recent, unwatchable movies like 'Oblivion.' This one has terrific action scenes orchestrated in rich 3D by director Doug Liman and cinematographer Dion Beebe.

Matt Damon Takes Over 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (Video)

It’s always fun when movie stars and talk-show hosts laugh at themselves and their genres, and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' did that for a terrific full hour last night when Matt Damon taped  Kimmel to a chair and highjacked the show as host. The ten-year running  joke has been that Kimmel bumped Damon as a guest every night, and Damon’s fake-revenge was full of surprise guests – including Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman and Amy Adams, with Sheryl Crow replacing the show’s bandleader and Andy Garcia taking over for sidekick Guillermo. All this and not a word from Kimmel himself, sitting there with a gag in his mouth.

The Best Films of 2012

My top three films of 2012 were easy to name, if not to order. Each is amazing, each wildly different from the other two, but they form a trio of incomparable experiences. There’s a deep dropoff from those three to the others, all fantastic --  though more flawed. I didn’t reach for ten movies (you do remember that I’m math-challenged?) because lists are arbitary enough. But every one of these eight films is worth your time, over and over again.

Since I saw Your Sister’s Sister at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Lynn Sheldon’s lovely, witty romantic comedy about a totally unlikely love triangle -- try this: a girl and her dead ex-boyfriend’s brother and her lesbian sister – has only come to seem more impressive against the season’s competition. It's a small relationship film with a big bold impact - witty, nuanced, beautifully acted.
