Jon Stewart, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand, Coldplay, Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd – that’s just part of the crazy-long list of performers who will be on stage at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday for the first U.S. version of The Secret Policeman’s Ball, the long-running, usually raucous and hilariously raw benefit in Britain for Amnesty International. The show will be on the EPIX channel and – even better – live-streamed free by EPIX so everyone can watch on-line.

Last night’s SNL started off with the best sketch of the show: Newt Gingrich, President of the Moon, with cameos by  Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Calista and a Reaganesque robot. (Everyone except host Channing Tatum.)

Channing Tatum did a pretty funny Matthew McConaughey impression in a not-so-funny sketch on SNL, and while he was a fine host overall the show didn’t really belong to him. All those sketches about his early stripper days became very one-note. But when the show turned away from Tatum, it took off. A highlight was Kristen Wiig as Lana Del Rey.

The reviews of New Year’s Eve make it sound like the end of the world, so it’s a quick step from there to SNL’s parody, a sequel in which thousands of stars collide on one very special night: Apocalypse.
