I will see Liam Neeson in anything, which doesn't mean I want to. So it was a relief to find that Non-Stop -- Taken meets Speed on a plane, with a dash of Agatha Christie -- was as breezily entertaining as a commercial action thriller is supposed to be.

Jon Stewart, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand, Coldplay, Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd – that’s just part of the crazy-long list of performers who will be on stage at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday for the first U.S. version of The Secret Policeman’s Ball, the long-running, usually raucous and hilariously raw benefit in Britain for Amnesty International. The show will be on the EPIX channel and – even better – live-streamed free by EPIX so everyone can watch on-line.

No one is smarter or funnier at tweaking celebrity than Ricky Gervais, and if you loved the inexhaustible wit of Extras as I did, you will probably also love his new HBO series Life’s Too Short, even though it doesn’t revolve around Gervais himself. Created by Davis, Gervais and his often underappreciated creative partner Stephen Merchant, the hero – or self-defeating anti-hero – is Warwick Davis, a dwarf and an actor who plays a skewed version of himself much the way Larry David does on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Davis is fine, but let’s be honest: the heart of the show is Gervais and Merchant, who in every episode meet some wildy funny star who makes a cameo appearance. This week’s guest scene is - and I am not exaggerating – one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen, and the unlikely comic is Liam Neeson.

Why Brave "The Grey"? Millions of Dollars, Says Liam Neeson (Video Interview)

What would entice Liam Neeson and director Joe Carnahan to endure the camera-and-butt-freezing conditions of a frigid shoot in British Columbia?  “Well, it was the millions I was paid,” Neeson laughed, which has to be one of those jokey answers with more than a hint of truth. The Grey is an adventure story about  men who survive a plane crash in a desolate snowy area, then have to figure out how not to be eaten by wolves – exactly the kind of high-voltage physical action movie Neeson has specialized in lately, following the mega-success of Taken.

Hard to believe, but now that Ricky Gervais has been announced as the returning host,  The Golden Globes are much more relevant than the Oscars – in the worlds of media and television if not film. Bringing Gervais back after his irreverent turn last time was always an inspired idea, but coming so soon after the Oscar-host debacle, the choice highlights just how out of touch the Oscars are. Brett Ratner as producer and Eddie Murphy as host was never very promising, but replacing them with Billy Crystal is the esssence of safe, timid television, or a bad flashback.
