Totally fun and totally (allegedly) drunk, the Golden Globes show rose to the crazy-high comic level of its hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It was loose and as slyly fun as the opening monologue, which at first seemed a bit tame -- until you noticed the edgy lines the hosts slipped in.

It's easy to spoof Girls, from Lena Dunham's very particular delivery to her character's unlimited insecurity and narcissism. But host Tina Fey took an entirely fresh approach in the best of the sketches from last night's otherwise tame Saturday Night Live, as a new roommate -- a peasant crone named Blerta who blurts out the truth to the friends. "Don't speak. They will know you are simple," she advises Shoshanna. But she saves the most perfect observation for Hannah (perfectly played by new cast member Noel Wells) at the end.

It’s too bad they disappeared for most of the show, because hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were by far the best part of watching The Golden Globes. Some of their lines were as jaw-dropping as anything Ricky Gervais said, but were delivered with such warmth that they didn’t seem to sting. “I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty,” Poehler said, “but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” The “special material” writers included SNL’s Seth Meyers and 30 Rock’s Robert Carlock, which explains a lot.

When recorded series go live, it’s usually hard to overcome the stuntiness of it all. (Alec Baldwin promised in a promo that the live 30 Rock would be “liver” than ever, so we all get to make up new words). But 30 Rock found a brilliant, hilarious meta-solution by making its live show about live TV.

There are Sarah Palin impersonations eerily close to reality: Tina Fey’s instant-classic comic version, and Julianne Moore’s dramatic one in the current HBO film Game Change. Then there’s Andy Samberg’s Sarah, unveiled on SNL.

Sarah Palin can whine all she wants, but no reasonable person believes that the creators of Game Change went out of their way to make her look shallow and ridiculous – she didn’t need any help with that. But the HBO film will certainly play better to people who see Palin as a blight on politics. This behind-the-scenes dramatization of her abrupt choice and disastrous campaign as John McCain’s running mate is a fast, smart and totally enjoyable tragi-comedy. Julianne Moore is an impressive Palin clone, right down to her confident walk and wave. But Game Change is also a cynical (if all too obvious) cautionary tale about the bubble-headed way elections work today. Palin just happens to be the best example we have.

Like many of you, I’ll be taking some time off over Christmas weekend, but please come back to this post and spend an escapist minute or two with some of the funniest videos of the year, from Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon in a live-action “Ambiguously Gay Duo” to Ricky Gervais’ notorious, scathingly funny monologue at the Golden Globes. Remember when the world pretended that was a problem? Gervais, of course, has signed on to host again. (Yay!)
