If you want to see Steve Buscemi at his recent best, don’t miss him as the strangely sympathetic and charismatic crooked politician Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire. (Preview tonight's tense, next-to-last episode of the season here.) But he had some good moments hosting SNL last night, in sketches that were more of a throwback to the weird-guy roles he has built his career on.
The movie-themed digital short was a tame Batman spoof, with Batman (Andy Samberg) stalking Commissioner Gordon - Buscemi, wearing glasses and moustache like Gary Oldman’s from the film - everywhere, even in the shower.
A more biting and funnier sketch played off the college pedophilie scandals, setting Buscemi’s character up as a perfectly innocent coach harrassed by the police and the media because he looks so suspicious. The sketch made it clear it wasn’t laughing at any real abuse, and the characters were perfect stereotypes, including Jason Sudeikis’s obtuse head coach and Buscemi’s hapless Coach Bert, who actually looks less like a pedophile than a craggier version of Ned Flanders on The Simpsons.
