The Jimmy Kimmel Live writers and producers are now officially among the smartest around. With Herman Cain as a guest on the very day a fourth woman, Sharon Bialek, took the spotlight to accuse him of sexual harassment, Kimmel leapt in with Cain jokes during his monologue. First he called Cain “the latest cast-off of Dancing With the Stars,” then corrected himself: “That’s a joke from next year.” That sounds pretty close to true.

Remember when Sarah Palin went into that Katie Couric interview expecting softball Mom questions, and came out in tatters? Well, OK “ What papers do you read?” really was a softball question for a vice-presidential candidate, but Palin was in shreds by the end anyway. And tonight, presidential candidate Herman Cain - who has moved from Godfather’s Pizza to The Campaign That Couldn’t Shoot Straight - is scheduled to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live, even while those sexual harassment accusations and murky, non-disclosure settlements are swirling around him. Laugh if you want to, but as Palin discovered, it is a mistake to underestimate your interviewer.

Saturday Night Live has been disappointing this season. Even Melissa McCarthy, whose episode was the season’s highlight, overcame horrible material with her all-out performance. But there were two extremely funny sketches last night, one on politics.

It’s one thing to know where the bodies are buried and another to know how to use that information. The best dramas about political thugs - and they are a fascinating breed - show us the behind-the scenes payoffs, blackmail schemes and turns of the screw that a politico uses to wield his power. So far the new Starz series Boss, with Kelsey Grammer as Tom Kane, the corrupt mayor of Chicago (I guess Chicago is so used to charges of corruption, using its real name isn’t even an insult) comes through with those sinister, twisty plots.

If you look closely into the herd of zombies stumbling through a school parking lot in next week’s episode of The Walking Dead, you’ll see one wearing a FEMA jacket – a mordant, apparently trivial detail that actually reveals one of the series’ major truths: The Government Can’t Help You.
