Each night during the Republican Convention, The Colbert Report has started with an intro that parodies Star Wars, as words scroll into space to introduce the coverage from Tampa: America Strikes Back. Last night’s legend included this:
"Meanwhile, on the swamp planet of Tampa, PRINCESS ANN ROMNEIA and CHRISTIE THE HUTT rally the Republican troops with news of Rebel leader MITT ROMNEY’s detailed plan to save America—which he will probably reveal right after the Election." (You can watch it at the start of the whole episode, here.)
Otherwise, as much as I love The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, I can’t say they’ve been at their sharpest during the Republican Convention. Even though Jon Stewart is live in Florida, his targets seem a day old. Colbert, taping earlier in the evening in New York, has done some wittier routines simply by being more generic and not trying to sound on top of things.
They did both have fun with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, though. Here’s Colbert, who manages to end with a Rain Man reference.
And here’s Stewart, who almost seems to be returning Priebus’ attacks on Obama in kind. Stewart speculates about Priebus’ real name. I wonder why Priebus says the country would be in better shape if Barack Obama had ever been inside a lemonade stand (and come to think of it, why does he think a lemonade stand has an inside?) In this segment about Ann Romney and Priebus, Stewart also calls out the inane idea that being a charming husband has anything to do with being president.
