Whether or not you're a devoted Simpsons fan, you'll want to  catch this opener to Sunday's annual Halloween 'Treehouse of Horror' episode, gleefully and lovingly directed by the great Guillermo del Toro.

The sequence is a typical del Toro mix of horror-love and artistry, as he offers a romp through the genre with references to beloved movies including The Birds, The Shining and his own Pan's Labyrinth, with Lisa Simpson as the heroine. It's no less than the smartest Simpson deserves.

Damn, that was too much to take in at once! He included references to all his movies, and even "Phantom of the Paradise" and the awesome hypno-toad from "Futurama"! That might have been the coolest thing ever, hard to believe I'm saying that in reference to something from the 25th season of "The Simpsons"
