As Scorsese points out – in a tongue-in-cheek way that is also true – Blackie isn’t the prettiest dog around but he has more depth. And while Uggie from The Artist has been making publicity stops and getting all the doggie press, it’s worth reminding people what his fans choose to ignore: Uggie had stunt doubles, named Dash and Dude. Reportedly the star did most of his own stunts, but isn't that what they always say?

Uggie doesn't deserve a backlash; it's not his fault the PR people for "The Artist" hustled more for him than the teams for the other movie dogs. I hope that everyone just celebrates the wonderful dogs who appeared in films this year and remember the important role animals have played in films since the earliest days, especially in light of the nostalgic nature of the leading films and Susan Orleans book about Rin Tin Tin.
