The James Franco-ABC synergy didn't start with the Oscars. In 2009 he appeared on General Hospital, part of the same fascination with TV that led him to make a film about Three's Company.
His Oscar-hosting stint is actually sandwiched between two new General Hospital appearances, on Friday and Monday. He plays the same character, a guy called Franco - apparently part of his fascination with himself.
I am not a soap opera fan. In my early freelance days I had to keep up with a soap to profile one of its stars and still think of it as the assignment from hell, so I was glad to catch up with Franco's character via ABC's quick slide show.
The fictional Franco arrived on the scene spraying graffitti around like some small-town Banksy, but it turned out he was also a serial killer. Why the real James Franco wants to give his name to that guy is something you'd have to ask him. But here's the word on the soap-opera character, in Franco 101.
This is one soap - or rather two episodes - I will watch.
