Even if you're not a fan of physical comedy - and I'm usually not - the brilliant Melissa McCarthy makes it hilarious and sophisticated. She began her latest SNL hosting gig by entering on sky-high, red-sequined platform heels, stumbling her way on stage in a routine that was also a goof on the absurdity of actress' shoes today.
The highlight of the night was the ham dance, as a woman determined to win a prize for her baked ham at a fair. Her character worked up a dance routine that was silly, hilarious and sly, with an echo of Madonna's "Vogue" as she pranced around with two male dancers dressed as pigs -- Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan in pink onesies and pig's ears, looking more like giant bunnies – and occasionally said "Ham!" It was a laugh-out-loud routine that evoked the best of Lucille Ball or Carol Burnett. Unfortunately, it's not on-line.
McCarthy is also an extraordinary actress, better than her films (even Bridesmaids) have let us see. And here's a video that proves it. In a sketch that had her applying for a small-business loan to eat pizza – her business was eating it, figuring people would pay to get rid of the leftovers -- she put on such a convincingly sad face when leaving the banker's office that the audience went, "Awwww." If she can do that, she can do anything.
Here she is in a timely sketch, as a hellish basketball coach.
