Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere won the Golden Lion, the main prize, at the Venice Film Festival in September, but when it was released in December the small-scale film seemed to get lost in the flood of louder, more crowd-pleasing awards-bait movies. This Hollywood story of an actor getting to know his 11-year-old daughter - with two magnificent, natural performances by Stephen Dorff and the super-talented Elle Fanning - was not the liveliest movie of the year. It was simply the loveliest.
The DVD arrives today. Here’s my review of the film.
And here’s a look at Dorff’s character, Johnny Marco, publicizing his new movie, with Michelle Monaghan as the co-star not so happy to see him again.
