The best part of the Emmy nominations? Jimmy Kimmel appearing in his pj’s, speaking truth to power. “This could be just as good at noon, really,” he said at the insane hour of 5:40 AM Pacific time. Kimmel, who will host the awards show on Sept 23., stepped in to announce the nominations with Kerry Washington when Nick Offerman was delayed in the East because of yesterday’s monster storm. And he went straight to an even more cogent point in an interview with GMA after the nominations.

“I adore you, Margaret, and I adore our family,” Nucky says as he finally proposes marriage in the season finale of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Of course, he needs her to be his wife so she can’t be forced to testify against him, but still --- nothing is more important than family, especially if there’s a crime family to keep organized, alive and out of prison.

If you want to see Steve Buscemi at his recent best, don’t miss him as the strangely sympathetic and charismatic crooked politician Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire. (Preview tonight's tense, next-to-last episode of the season here.) But he had some good moments hosting SNL last night, in sketches that were more of a throwback to the weird-guy roles he has built his career on.

All season, as I’ve talked to people about Boardwalk Empire, I’ve been surprised to find that it often leaves viewers cold – they don’t hate it, they’re just not engaged. (Not enough zombies?) I still find it the richest series on television, with the most believably layered, ethically challenged characters. Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson is a classic, a corrupt politician whose warm heart occasionally shines through. Do we doubt that he loves Margaret in his own peculiarly defensive way?   (As I said at the season’s start, they’re Tony and Carmela in the 20’s.)
