One of the surest signs that Downton Abbey has become a full-blown hit and pop-cult phenomenon is the mini- and strained flap that has erupted about whether it is snobbish or middle-brow or an old-fashioned soap opera. I don’t see why it can’t be all three. The series satisfies our indulgent fantasies of an old-fashioned life of leisure. Of course we know it’s pure illusion; even Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, told David Letterman about her working-class roots, and the fact that her ancestors would surely have worked downstairs. But what a satisfying fantasy!

David Letterman’s Top Ten List has become the place politicians go for damage control (remember Rick Perry’s Top Ten Excuses for his “I forgot” moment?), or to try so liven up a robotic image or revive a faltering campaign. The robotic and the faltering problems both apply to Mitt Romney, who last night delivered the “Top Ten Things Mitt Romney Would Like To Say To The American People.”

What a difference a brain-freeze makes. Yesterday's news was all about Herman Cain, but after Rick Perry couldn't remember all three of the federal agencies he wants to abolish during last night's Republican debate, he became the big political story for reasons consultants dread. As Perry said in explaining himself: "Oops!" Tonight as part of his damage-control tour (good luck with that), he appeared on Late Show With David Letterman to deliver his Top Ten Excuses.
