Last night in Part 2 of Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Downton Abbey’ parody, ‘Downton Sixbey,’  Lady Hedith – the incomparable and lovely Fred Armisen --  repsonded to a declaration of love and a marriage proposal from Downton’s heir, Lord Questlove. Their parents, including Fallon as the Earl of Downton Sixbey and Whoopi Goldberg as Lady Whoopi  had something to say about that.

Jimmy Fallon calls it 'Downton Sixbey' (in honor of his studio, 6B). I think of it as'Keeping Up With The Granthams' (hoping for the spinoff,' Lady Hedith and the Dowager Take Miami'). But whatever you call it, the 'Late Night' satire is a howling spoof of 'Downton Abbey'. Picking up on this season’s Downton plot, here the Earl of Sixbey reveals how he has lost the family fortune (it was not investing in a railroad).

If you have not yet watched the stunning latest episode of 'Downton Abbey,' don’t read on. If you have (or just want to find out who died) go to the next page for my review of the understandable but I think wrong-headed shocker. To paraphrase 'South Park':

If there is one episode of 'Downton Abbey' you won’t want to miss, it’s this week’s. I won’t give anything away, except to say that the video preview here doesn’t begin to prepare you for the high drama of the most tension-filled episode so far -- in fact, until the season finale. (DVR the Screen Actors Guild Awards; all those actors will still be there babbling about their SAG cards when you’re ready.)

Season 3 of Downton Abbey – as soapy, dramatic and witheringly funny as ever, and at times shatteringly sad – begins in the spring of 1920, and everything now has a whiff of the modern. Daisy the kitchen maid rides a bike through the village, Mary and Matthew are planning their wedding, Anna is determined to find the evidence that will free Bates from prison, and in the midst of all that comes the real bombshell. Lord Grantham has made a very bad investment, losing most of his American wife’s fortune; they may have to put Downton on the market. Viewers caught in the 2008 economic crisis can relate.

Much of the cast of Downton Abbey  -- including Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, but not Magge Smith or Michelle Dockery -- has been in New York promoting the Jan. 6th premiere of the new season, and they have faced a flood of uninteresting questions. But if the low point was Savannah Guthrie’s vapid, gushy group interview on Today, the best idea came from The Colbert Report, which enlisted a few of the Downton actors to reenact their series as if it were Breaking Bad.

The best part of the Emmy nominations? Jimmy Kimmel appearing in his pj’s, speaking truth to power. “This could be just as good at noon, really,” he said at the insane hour of 5:40 AM Pacific time. Kimmel, who will host the awards show on Sept 23., stepped in to announce the nominations with Kerry Washington when Nick Offerman was delayed in the East because of yesterday’s monster storm. And he went straight to an even more cogent point in an interview with GMA after the nominations.

Just when you’ve gotten through Downton Abbey withdrawal, here’s another parody to remind you of what’s missing from television: Jimmy Fallon and friends from Studio 6B give us Downton Sixbey. In the spirit of Jersey Floor, it sounds like a recurring Late Night series, which would be great (it will give Fallon a chance to work on a  consistent British accent). But this version is already fun for it guest appearances.

Heading into this Sunday’s Christmas-themed finale of Downton Abbey, you might worry that the season would end with another excruciating cliff-hanger. Mary and Matthew are undoubtedly in love, but will the question of their on-and-off and currently still-off engagement be resolved? (Really, only House and Cuddy were more back-and-forth about things.) I won’t give away the resolution, but there is one at the end. The series could have ended there, but this second-season conclusion also sets us up for season 3 -  and of course, who knows what might change then?
