The cast of George Clooney's The Monuments Men have been everywhere lately, promoting a film that will need all their high-profile popularity to lure viewers in. Critics have rejected it. It is very rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. I found the World War II adventure about recovered art strangely flat. (You can read my review here.)

Who knows if these parodies might have helped Zero Dark Thirty in the Oscar race? (Could they have hurt more than the controversy about torture?) Laughing about the subject probably wasn’t in anybody's awards strategy, but these two very funny videos reveal how firmly the film has pervaded the cultural conversation.

After the success of his hilarious all-star fake trailer, Movie: The Movie, which premiered after last year’s Oscars -- and has been viewed over 20 million times on YouTube alone, more than 30 million overall -- Jimmy Kimmel has come back with a follow-up. As he says, "When you have a big success in Hollywood, there's only one reasonable thing you can do: cheapen it with a sequel.”

It’s always fun when movie stars and talk-show hosts laugh at themselves and their genres, and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' did that for a terrific full hour last night when Matt Damon taped  Kimmel to a chair and highjacked the show as host. The ten-year running  joke has been that Kimmel bumped Damon as a guest every night, and Damon’s fake-revenge was full of surprise guests – including Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman and Amy Adams, with Sheryl Crow replacing the show’s bandleader and Andy Garcia taking over for sidekick Guillermo. All this and not a word from Kimmel himself, sitting there with a gag in his mouth.

Rush Limbaugh's Gift to Conan and Kimmel: The Bane-Bain Conspiracy (Video)

For a while it seemed as if that ogre Rush Limbraugh had drained all the fun out of the Bane/Bain coincidence by taking it seriously, claiming that "The Dark Knight Rises" villain Bain was meant as a left-wing attack on Romney’s outsourcing, money-making company Bain. That idea, of course, is so ludicrous that it was quickly turned back on Limbaugh, who became the butt of late-night routines. Funny in spite of himself, he just can’t help handing comedians these gifts.

Will Ferrell Visits Jimmy Kimmel, En (Broken) Espagnol

Whatever Casa de Mi Padre turns out to be – and it looks promising – Will Ferrell hasn’t fallen into the trap of promoting it with the same familiar answers on every talk show around. He has promoted it with different comic routines on every talk show around. The movie is a spoof of spaghetti Westerns, with the absurdist twist that it is made entirely in Spanish. To promote it on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ferrell and Kimmel did their whole interview in intentionally mangled Spanish – at least that’s what the subtitles told me.

When Oprah was Jimmy Kimmel’s guest on his Post-Oscar show, she didn’t just turn up to promote her network, OWN. She got advice from Kimmel, who in this short film suggests several new shows to boost OWN’s ratings, including Book Club Fight Club. In their interview, Oprah said she wants to act more, and this is a pretty good start if she wants to do comedy.

If the Oscar show was all about safety and nostalgia, Jimmy Kimmel’s Post-Oscar special proves what movies are really about: big-name stars, silly plots, endless promotion. Kimmel got some of the biggest stars and plenty of Oscar winners and nominees to join in his parody trailer for Movie: The Movie. There’s George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks as RoboLawyer, Gary Oldman as a Centaur, Gabourey Sidibe as Black Hitler, Matt Damon as a bunch of grapes and much more.

Predicting the Oscars while sitting in New York is possible, but probably not the best way to guess – it’s like covering the Republican primaries through the media without ever setting foot in a caucus state. You can do it, but someone who has more contact with the locals may have an edge. So we might as well trust Uggie’s Oscar predictions. That silent-film but surely French-accented dog from The Artist has gone Hollywood for awards season, and has been predicting the Oscars every night this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
