'The Monuments Men' Cast On Jimmy Kimmel: Matt Damon and Bill Murray Steal the Show

The cast of George Clooney's The Monuments Men have been everywhere lately, promoting a film that will need all their high-profile popularity to lure viewers in. Critics have rejected it. It is very rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. I found the World War II adventure about recovered art strangely flat. (You can read my review here.)

Predicting the Oscars: Don't Trust Me, Trust Nate Silver

I was thinking this might be the first year in recent memory when the Oscars actually held some suspense about the winners. Is anything really a lock for Best Picture? What about that wacky Best Directors race, already full of also-rans? Then I read Nate Silver’s thoroughly lucid and compelling analysis in his FiveThirtyEight blog, so: Argo, Argo, Argo. And Spielberg.

Matt Damon Takes Over 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (Video)

It’s always fun when movie stars and talk-show hosts laugh at themselves and their genres, and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' did that for a terrific full hour last night when Matt Damon taped  Kimmel to a chair and highjacked the show as host. The ten-year running  joke has been that Kimmel bumped Damon as a guest every night, and Damon’s fake-revenge was full of surprise guests – including Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman and Amy Adams, with Sheryl Crow replacing the show’s bandleader and Andy Garcia taking over for sidekick Guillermo. All this and not a word from Kimmel himself, sitting there with a gag in his mouth.

Jimmy Kimmel Hosts the Emmys (UPDATED With New Video)

Jimmy Kimmel was a perfectly smooth host for the Emmys, though not a perfect fit. One of his trademarks, prankish humor – he asked viewers to Tweet that Tracy Morgan had passed out – didn’t translate to an awards show. His other trademark, irreverently taking swipes at the self-importance of show busines, was oddly missing. That was left to a few clever nominees. What worked best were the pre-arranged comic bits by winners and the people they beat. Julia Louis-Dreyfus read an acceptance speech Amy Poehler had supposedly slipped into her hand (that piece of paper was too big and crumpled to be anything other than a prop). Even better, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert wrestled Jon Stewart to the ground to keep him from heading to the stage when The Daily Show won Best Variety show.

Watch Jimmy Kimmel in His PJ's Announce the Emmy Nominations

The best part of the Emmy nominations? Jimmy Kimmel appearing in his pj’s, speaking truth to power. “This could be just as good at noon, really,” he said at the insane hour of 5:40 AM Pacific time. Kimmel, who will host the awards show on Sept 23., stepped in to announce the nominations with Kerry Washington when Nick Offerman was delayed in the East because of yesterday’s monster storm. And he went straight to an even more cogent point in an interview with GMA after the nominations.

We always knew it would be impossible to top last year’s hilarious and secretly dramatic White House Correspondents Dinner, when President Obama slammed Donald Trump – and secretly knew the attack on Osama Bin Laden was underway. But this year's version had its own even edgier tone.

Every producer knows you’re not through until you have drained all the possible behind-the-scenes extras for the DVD; same for Jimmy Kimmel’s parody trailer Movie: The Movie. The third installment was on his prime-time special last night, and he saved some of the best for last, including a short supposedly directed by George Clooney, starring Martin Scorsese in black and white. (Wonder what they’re making fun of.)

When Oprah was Jimmy Kimmel’s guest on his Post-Oscar show, she didn’t just turn up to promote her network, OWN. She got advice from Kimmel, who in this short film suggests several new shows to boost OWN’s ratings, including Book Club Fight Club. In their interview, Oprah said she wants to act more, and this is a pretty good start if she wants to do comedy.

Predicting the Oscars while sitting in New York is possible, but probably not the best way to guess – it’s like covering the Republican primaries through the media without ever setting foot in a caucus state. You can do it, but someone who has more contact with the locals may have an edge. So we might as well trust Uggie’s Oscar predictions. That silent-film but surely French-accented dog from The Artist has gone Hollywood for awards season, and has been predicting the Oscars every night this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
