If you missed the Golden Globes and Ricky Gervais’ disappointing, toothless job as host, take a look at the best and worst clips, from his uninspired monologue to his sharp-edged, tongue-in-cheek introduction of Colin Firth, a segment that seemed like a rare throwback to last year’s edginess.

And just like that, the Golden Globes went back to being one more bloated, boring awards show. You could tell from the start when Ricky Gervais came out and began with a Kim Kardashian joke – really? so obvious? – and not even a funny one, counting off the ways she’s different from Kate Middleton. She’s louder, trashier, drunker ... sigh. He took swipes at NBC’s fourth place status among networks, which is so tired and so true it doesn’t qualify as edgy even though he was on NBC. And he did all this wearing a maroon tieless tux from somebody’s long-ago prom. OK, maybe that was ironic. Ugly but ironic.

No,That’s not Ricky Gervais above, it’s Jason Sudeikis on SNL as the guy who will host The Golden Globes . . . as well as every other awards show, including local flower shows, dog shows and the BET awards, some much more successfully than others.

We could stretch it to more than four, but let’s stay focused. All ears, of course, will be on Ricky Gervais, as we wonder what he can possibly do to top his hilarious, irreverent turn as host last year. The first five minutes should tell.

Ricky Gervais has been making the media rounds pumping up his Golden Globes appearance on Sunday, and has played it fairly safe while insisting he’s going to take risks as host. But when he appeared with Conan O’Brien, he went for the really risky stuff, turning his chest into – believe it or not – a porn site. You can catch it in this barely suitable for work segment.

When Ricky Gervais comes back to host the Golden Globes on Sunday, there’s one thing he’ll be missing: the element of surprise. His acerbic digs were explosive last year because they created such unease in the room, a reaction very different from the easy laughter of all of us at home. Really, those stars were not prepared to laugh at themselves. But now they’re all in on the joke, ready – maybe they’ll even be honored – to be the target of a Gervais insult.

Like many of you, I’ll be taking some time off over Christmas weekend, but please come back to this post and spend an escapist minute or two with some of the funniest videos of the year, from Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon in a live-action “Ambiguously Gay Duo” to Ricky Gervais’ notorious, scathingly funny monologue at the Golden Globes. Remember when the world pretended that was a problem? Gervais, of course, has signed on to host again. (Yay!)

Hard to believe, but now that Ricky Gervais has been announced as the returning host,  The Golden Globes are much more relevant than the Oscars – in the worlds of media and television if not film. Bringing Gervais back after his irreverent turn last time was always an inspired idea, but coming so soon after the Oscar-host debacle, the choice highlights just how out of touch the Oscars are. Brett Ratner as producer and Eddie Murphy as host was never very promising, but replacing them with Billy Crystal is the esssence of safe, timid television, or a bad flashback.
