Mick Jagger was host of one of the best SNL’s of the season, a high-energy finale that relied on Jagger’s persona and was fueled by so much nostalgia that it seemed like classic rock, with Jagger doing "19th Nervous Breakdown" with Foo Fighters, "The Last Time" with Arcade Fire and "Ruby Tuesday" in the show-ending goodbye to Kristen Wiig, who’s leaving SNL.

Will Ferrell And Jason Sudeikis Give Us the Secret George W. and Biden

It would take a lot more than a Will Ferrell impression to make me want George W. Bush to return for real, but Ferrell’s always hilarious fake-Bush was the highlight of last night’s SNL. In the cold open, President Obama (Fred Armisen, as usual) entered the bedroom of the Vice President, decorated in pure high-school-kid style. Jason Sudeikis was especially funny as a petulant Joe Biden, annoyed that he got no credit for pushing Obama’s gay marriage endorsement over the line. Obama left him with twenty bucks for pizza, wary about Biden’s imaginary friend George – then guess who steps out of the bedroom closet?

Will Ferrell’s comedy is both incomparably goofy and totally droll about it, and both sides of his humor kicked in during his guest spot on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He was promoting his hosting spot on this week’s SNL, but also brought along the trailer for his new political comedy with Zach Galifianakis, The Campaign, coming in August.

Steven Spielberg played himself in an SNL Digital Short last night, as the ostensible director of the latest installment of Laser Cats  -- the low-tech, sci-fi series with Andy Samberg and Bill Hader, a perfect franchise for a guy obsessed with space aliens. Although the Spielberg alter ego called attention to what he crowingly called his “Hitchcockian cameo” in the film, the real homages were to E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jurassic Park.

Sofia Vergara breaks away from Modern Family to host SNL this Saturday. She’s game and funny, but if the show doesn't go beyond easy, obvious accent-jokes there’ll be a lot of ’splainin to do.

There has been an avalanche of hype and a little hand-wringing about the season premiere of Mad Men on Sunday. (Brief review: it’s good and answers some cliff-hanging questions in a flash.) But don’t let his amazing performance as Don Draper obscure the fact that Jon Hamm is a very funny guy, as we know from his appearances on SNL. Last night, he and Jimmy Fallon has a water war that redfines silliness.

Lindsay Lohan hosted SNL last night and the less said about that the better. Was Lorne Michaels trying to do her a favor? Or latch onto tabloid hype? Either way, it felt like punishment for us, with a couple of exceptions. Jon Hamm showed up in a couple of great short cameos: one as the back-up host sitting in the audience; another pretending to be in love with Snooki, played by Bobby Moynihan on Weekend Update.

OK, I surrender – if not to The Artist, to the charming, exuberant SNL dance sketch and Artist tribute starring Jean Dujardin himself.

One of the surest signs that Downton Abbey has become a full-blown hit and pop-cult phenomenon is the mini- and strained flap that has erupted about whether it is snobbish or middle-brow or an old-fashioned soap opera. I don’t see why it can’t be all three. The series satisfies our indulgent fantasies of an old-fashioned life of leisure. Of course we know it’s pure illusion; even Michelle Dockery, who  plays Lady Mary, told David Letterman about her working-class roots, and the fact that her ancestors would surely have worked downstairs.  But what a satisfying fantasy!

Zooey Deschanel, star of the funny, charming Fox series New Girl, and the person who gave currency to the work adorkable, will host this week’s SNL.
