Last night’s SNL started off with the best sketch of the show: Newt Gingrich, President of the Moon, with cameos by Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, Calista and a Reaganesque robot. (Everyone except host Channing Tatum.)

Channing Tatum did a pretty funny Matthew McConaughey impression in a not-so-funny sketch on SNL, and while he was a fine host overall the show didn’t really belong to him. All those sketches about his early stripper days became very one-note. But when the show turned away from Tatum, it took off. A highlight was Kristen Wiig as Lana Del Rey.

Daniel Radcliffe hosts Saturday Night Live this week. He has already proven he can do more than be Harry Potter – he may not be brilliant at singing or dancing but he’s game and charismatic, and he was the only good thing in the creaky Broadway revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.

Like many of you, I’ll be taking some time off over Christmas weekend, but please come back to this post and spend an escapist minute or two with some of the funniest videos of the year, from Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon in a live-action “Ambiguously Gay Duo” to Ricky Gervais’ notorious, scathingly funny monologue at the Golden Globes. Remember when the world pretended that was a problem? Gervais, of course, has signed on to host again. (Yay!)

The reviews of New Year’s Eve make it sound like the end of the world, so it’s a quick step from there to SNL’s parody, a sequel in which thousands of stars collide on one very special night: Apocalypse.

Alec Baldwin is one of the best SNL hosts, and he brought some of that sketch style to Conan last night.

With Romney the default Republican candidate, the impressions of him are piling up. Jason Sudeikis’ needs some work (so far Jimmy Fallon and his glistening Romney wig are in the lead) but this SNL sketch with Romney  trying desperately to be edgy – yes, he wears a leather jacket – is a shrewd take on political consultants.

In her second appearance as SNL host, Emma Stone proved that her great performance last time was no fluke. She's funny, game, not locked into her own image. The best sketch from last night's show didn't take her far from what might have been one of her movie roles, though, as office workers have a good cry over the Adele song "Someone Like You."  You can watch it at the SNL site; keep an eye out for Coldplay. NBC isn't allowing embeds for the "Sad Song" sketch, but it is for the night's other highlight: Jason Sudeikis as the Devil, horrified at the Penn State scandal. Take a look:
