The back-from-the-dead characters in Sundance Channel's smart, enthralling series The Returned have much more élan than your usual zombies – and not only because they speak French, although that helps. There's no lurching around, no corroded faces slipping away from the skull. These are flesh and blood people who have returned to their isolated mountain town years after they were dead and buried, resuming their existences where they left off, while time for others has moved on. Camille, 15 years old when her school bus crashed, walks back in the door one day with no idea of how she got there, only to find that her twin, Lena, is now 19.

Charlotte Rampling and Michelle Dockery Go Spying in Sundance Channel's 'Restless'

Once a spy, always a spy – that’s the premise of the sleekly entertaining and wonderfully (if sometimes implausibly) cast thriller Restless. The two-part period piece on Sundance Channel (Part 1 premieres tonight, Part 2 next Friday) offers a double-whammy of time periods. The story begins in the 1970’s with a single mother and graduate student named Ruth Gilmartin. Because she is played by Michelle Dockery  -- Lady Mary from Downton Abbey – and is every bit as commonsensical as that character we get the added wit of seeing Lady Mary transported to the future, where she wears hippie-chic bellbottoms and oversize sunglasses.

No one wants to sympathize with a serial killer, yet real life has shown us how often they charm their victims. Dominic West eerily walks that line between seductive and repellent in Sundance Channel’s sharp psychological thriller Appropriate Adult (a film premiering Saturday at 10 PM ET). West plays the real-life Fred West (happily for him, no relation) who tortured and killed at least a dozen women over more than a decade, including one of his own daughters. Sometimes he had an accomplice – his wife.
