George Lucas had some cranky – but not wrong – things to say about the difficulties of mainstream distribution on The Daily Show last night. He showed up to promote Red Tails, a film about black fliers during World War II that he produced and financed and, he says, had been trying unsuccessfully to get studios interested in for years. Stewart, speaking for most of us, was kind of incredulous – George Lucas can’t get something out there?  - but Lucas, with some wit yet still in cranky-geezer mode, is worth hearing.

The compensation for post-vacation return to real life: new episodes of late night shows. None of them were at their best last night, with The Daily Show and Colbert Report suffering most from having taped before the Iowa Caucuses even started. Not that Mitt Romney’s squeaker win would have mattered much, but as Jon Stewart explained in a ghost-story voice, he didn’t have results because “I’m speaking to you from the past.”

He did have this comparison of the Republicans’ flavor-of-the-week experiment with the Amish period of adolescence and confusion, rumspringa. In Romspringa, Republicans will eventually head back to the safety of  Romney. Forrest Gump couldn’t have said it better: the Republicans are like a box of chocolates.

Jon Stewart takes on the absurdity of Lowe’s dropping out as a sponsor of TLC’s reality series All-American Muslim, in a segment that skewered TLC’s own icky Toddlers and Tiaras, as well as the lunacy of social critics who complained that the people on All-Amercan Muslim weren’t depicted as terrorists. He then turned things over to Asif Mandvi, “Senior Muslim Correspondent,” who pointed out the great deals on terrorist supplies at Lowe’s, with prices so good,  “You can’t afford not to blow something up.”

Jimmy Kimmel may have been the only late-night host with Herman Cain as his guest last night, but he wasn't the only one with Cain in his sights. Take a look at Jon Stewart's typically ultra-smart take.
