New Zealand Cinema

This morning, a local filmmaker drove a few of us visiting filmmakers to the New Zealand beach where Jane Campion shot "The Piano," a film I love.

In honor of today's pilgrimage, here is my top ten list of favorite films by New Zealand directors, in order of preference (I have yet to see "Whale Rider," "Once Were Warriors," "The World's Fastest Indian," "Utu," or "Lord of the Rings"):

1) Two Girls (Jane Campion)
2) Sweetie (Jane Campion)
3) The Piano (Jane Campion)
4) A Girl's Own Story (Jane Campion)
5) Passionless Moments (Jane Campion)
6) An Angel at my Table (Jane Campion)
7) Kitchen Sink (Alison Maclean)
8) Crush (Alison Maclean)
9) Peel (Jane Campion)
10) Two Cars, One Night (Taika Waititi)

See the World's Fastest Indian, Caveh. You'll like it! I thoroughly enjoyed this film and Hopkins was an excellent choice as the lead. A very good "feel good" film.

Hey Caveh, It was great meeting you and seing you're incredibly honest film. Here are a couple NZ films worth tracking down:

"Goodbye Pork pie" - our easy rider 20 yrs behind usa, plus the last quarter has a very Godardian feel.(perhaps its the score?)
"Vigil" by Vincent Ward, my personal fav. NZ film. Great look at isolated adolecscence.
And for interesting genre fare Check out "The quiet earth" its the old Last man on earth story, but here in NZ.
Finally "Smash Palace" a powerful look at divorce.

Good luck with your future projects and maybe I will see you on the streets of San Fran!!
