The World's Mostest Clichés

"Let's have some new clichés."
- Samuel Goldwyn

The flight back to San Francisco wasn't nearly as stimulating as the flight to New Zealand. I tried watching Lord of the Rings on the plane but I couldn't stand it. So I watched The World's Fastest Indian instead, which I wasn't too crazy about either. Anthony Hopkins was good, as always, but what a god-awful script. I don't think I've ever seen so many clichés in a single two hour period.

Afterwards, to cleanse my palate, I watched Perfect Strangers, another film from New Zealand (I wanted to watch as many New Zealand films as possible before my current fascination with all things New Zealand fades completely). "Perfect Strangers" is about a woman who is kidnapped by a man she doesn't know (but who claims to be in love with her), and whom she eventually kills in self-defense (before falling in love with him retroactively after his death). In any case, it was a lot less clichéd than "The World's Fastest Indian."

do you have any sway over ray carny? Get him to update his website i've read it top to bottom.......

i second that! carney needs to update.

Thanks for the suggestion. I probably will update it sometime soon. I have a ton of new material, but the site costs me so much money to keep going (and to keep updated) that it is always a struggle and my lowest priority. On top of that my Dean, Chairman, and colleagues are doing their best to force me to take down most or all of it since they regard it as criticizing a lot of what they do. They hate it and criticize it. (And some of them are right to feel that way; I'm odd-man out in a very mainstream, middle-brow program, sad to say.) So it's an endless battle. Like most of the rest of life, I guess. Anyway, I will probably start updating it again in the next month or so. Tell anyone who has read all of it that they should read my books and essays--the stuff that is not on the site--which is actually deeper and more important than the stuff that's up here, and if I sold a few more of those things, I might be able to hire someone to update it. But thanks to all who care!

Hey Ray. Great site, glad to hear that it'll be updated. But I agree: the books are where it's really at.

You are the fellow human I've ever found who also detested Lord of the Rings. Thank you. There's hope for me now. ;)

Did you really think the Worlds Fastest Indian was filled with so many cliches??

If you rented the DVD, you'd see interviews with the real Burt Munro and much of what Anthony Hopkins says in the movie comes straight from Burt's own interviews!! You're calling Burt a human cliche! Come on, Caveh, it wasnt as bad a script as you say. This was a good, independent film. I've recommended it to people who I know would enjoy it and they all have.

IT WAS GOOD IT WAS AWESOME SO STOP TREATING KIWIS LIKE THEY'RE USELESS COZ YOU CAN'T TALK!!!!
