DVD Cover Compromise

Yesterday, the Weinstein Company sent me a revised DVD cover. I had complained that the previous cover was lacking in humor, and that I found the Roger Ebert quote less-than-inspiring. I liked the new cover much better than the last one, and preferred the new quote, but I was still unconvinced that it was better than the original poster image. Moreover, when I asked for feedback from readers, the comments were overwhelmingly in favor of the original poster.

Today, I spoke with the marketing people at the Weinstein Company, and they said two things that I found convincing. 1) They said that if a couple walked into a video store together to look for a video to watch together, they would be more likely to rent a video with their DVD Cover than with mine. I found this plausible, and most likely true. 2) They said that they had taken their own survey, and that the comments they had gotten were overwhelmingly in favor of their DVD cover. I found this surprising, since I'd had the opposite experience, but I conceded that my blog readers were undoubtedly a very specialized audience, and might not represent the majority opinion.

I nevertheless objected that the proposed cover arguably misrepresents the film, and that the hypothetical video couple might rent it but then be annoyed that the film wasn't what they had been led to expect - namely a sexy, erotic thriller. The Weinstein Company people countered by saying that the poster also misrepresented the film, and that they had found the film to be much funnier and more complicated than the poster had led them to expect. Moreover, they argued that their proposed cover would more likely bring in a wide range of viewers who might not otherwise rent the film, but who might really like it once they saw it.

Their arguments were persuasive, and so I capitulated and agreed to their proposed compromise cover.

it's kind of amazing how much goes into all these decisions... also, for what it's worth, i think the little arrow in the 'compromise' version (not to mention the font) does a lot to remove the 'erotic thriller' vibe from the image.

say the word (seriously) and i will go to the weinstein offices with three people who will accept only the original poster cover art. i am not sure why this is such a big deal to me. i guess i am putting myself, as a filmmaker, in your position. also, as a dvd lover, i will accept no other cover.

Please make sure they correct the spelling of "peversely interesting"!

Peter,
I appreciate your willingness to help, but I think what you are suggesting would be counter-productive. They are nice people, and they mean well. I have no interest in a showdown. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to navigate these waters, and I think the compromise DVD cover is the best option. It's only one of many "compromises," and they really do have a point.

Is it just me, or is the newest cover not showing up?

Michael,
I tried on two computers but I can't see the new cover, all the other images I do see.

Michael,
Not sure why it's not showing up for you. It shows up on my computer. Maybe it just takes a while to load?

Hey Caveh. If I right click and select "view image," it says:

The image “http://blogs.indiewire.com/caveh/images/DVDcoverrevised.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

and it shows up as a red X on internet explorer.

Michael,
I tried re-loading it. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what else will, other than using a different browser.

Yeah, I started up Opera, and it works now. Sorry for putting you through any trouble.

The new cover is better.

I guess you better downlaod Opera, Sujewa.

Having read your blog for a while now, Caveh, I have to admit that I missed your film at VIFF last year exactly because of the original poster. It made me mistaken your film as one of these random and forgettable American indies. Very soon I learned my mistake and have been regretting my choice ever since. For me, this is simply the most highly anticipated DVD this year (well, along with Cache maybe).

Oh, as a university blog administrator, I have to bring to your attention that the "Post" button on the comment preview page doesn't quite link to the commenting cgi file... at least not for Firefox. Could be one of these template hiccups for MT 3.2
