"Today I started as the new Film Editor of @TheAVClub. Excited, honored, nervous, all those feelings. Wish me luck."
Dowd succeeds outgoing A.V. Club Film Editor Scott Tobias, who announced his departure earlier this month. The Chicago-based pop culture site wasted little time replacing him; Tobias' last day was Friday, Dowd's first was today (Tobias already tweeted a note of support).
After seeing all the chatter on Twitter, I reached out to Dowd to confirm the news and see if he wanted to make any kind of comment on the new gig. Here's what he had to say:
"As a longtime reader and admirer of the A.V. Club, I'm beyond excited to join its esteemed ranks. Obviously, I've got big shoes to fill. Scott Tobias, my predecessor, is one of the most talented critics and editors working today. My goal is to carry on the legacy of informed but accessible criticism he and the rest of the AVC team has forged. Really, I'm just grateful for the opportunity."
I've never met Dowd, but as an occasional contributor to Time Out Chicago during his two year tenure there, I read plenty of his work, and it's good. Tobias' shoes are indeed quite large (him I've met; big, big shoes), but I'm intrigued to see what Dowd does with the position.
