Sound Mixer of 'Get On Up' Comments on Negative 'Get On Up' Reviews

The sound mixer for "Get On Up" likes "Get On Up," does not like "The Muppet Movie."

Sometimes when critics pan a film, the people behind the grouse about it in interviews. Sometimes they accept the criticism with more graciousness, as director Eric England did in The Dissolve's comment boards when Mike D'Angelo gave the film a mixed review. But this week sees one of the more baffling/hilarious reactions to negative reviews in quite some time.

Someone claiming to be the sound mixer of "Get On Up" (which would make him Greg P. Russell, unless he's one of the other people who worked on sound on the film) hasn't taken too kindly to those who didn't go for the movie, and he's published a few comments on the boards of their respective web sites. It all started innocuously enough with comments on the Oscar prognostication site Rope of Silicon, where, writing as "Filmix," he argued that Chadwick Boseman belonged in the predicted final five nominees alongside the likes of Michael Keaton ("Birdman"), Steve Carell ("Foxcatcher") and Timothy Spall ("Mr. Turner").

Filmix: All I can say is once you've seen Chadwick Boseman in GET ON UP you'll all be singing a different tune. If Jamie Fox won for Ray then Chadwick will no doubt be nominated and very well could win this year. His performance is truly AMAZING !!!!!!

Alex Feinstein: When did you see it?

Filmix: I mixed sound on the film. Saw it for the last 2 months.

Hardly impartial, but there's nothing wrong with showing enthusiasm for your own movie. But when Slant Magazine's Eric Henderson awarded the film a paltry two stars, Mr. Filmix felt the need to sound off.

Pete Hammond has a way better take on this film than you do. Chadwick Boseman is absolutely AMAZING in this role and there isn't a more challenging role out there this year. You just don't get it do ya !!

Pete Hammond's review is available on YouTube, and his take mostly consists of his amazement that James Brown did the things that James Brown did and that it's a "toe-tapping movie" that "pulls no punches." Still not satisfied, Filmix took on the Austin Chronicle's William Goss, who found the film to be a cliched biopic that stuck the talented Boseman in Celebrity Impression Land.

You didn't find Chadwick Boseman absolutely PHENOMENAL in this role. This film is PURE ENTERTAINMENT. I take it you liked the Muppet Movie.

I'm mostly just puzzled in this instance as to what makes the Muppets antithetical to James Brown. And does Filmix mean the recent "Muppets Most Wanted," 2011's "The Muppets," or does his ire go all the way back to 1979's "The Muppet Movie?" Can't we like both James Brown and The Muppets?

Finally, Filmix saw Ignatiy Vishnevetsky's D+ review in The A.V. Club, where Vishnevetsky referred to the film as shapeless, simplistic and sophomoric.

Ya all don't have a clue. You must feel like complete idiots when so many well respected critics think Boseman is OUTSTANDING and the film is as well. CHUMPS

It's unclear whether or not Filmix is done commenting on negative reviews of "Get On Up," but when comment sections can get as nasty as they did with Stephanie Zacharek's negative review of "Guardians of the Galaxy," it's a breath of fresh air to find some that are merely goofy. Have fun watching "The Muppet Movie," CHUMPS.
