'The Master' Leads All Nominees for the 16th Annual Online Film Critics Society Awards

Paul Thomas Anderson's film earned eight nominations. Other Best Picture nominees include "Argo," "Holy Motors," "Moonrise Kingdom," and "Zero Dark Thirty."

Christmas came early for Paul Thomas Anderson this year, as the nearly 200 elves of the Online Film Critics Society (this one included) nominated his film "The Master" for eight of their annual awards. Anderson himself was nominated for Best Director while all three of his stars -- Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams -- picked up nominations of their own. Nods for Picture, Editing, Cinematography, and Original Screenplay makes eight, if I've got my math right (I'm on my ninth glass of nog, so I might not).

Overall, I think it's an excellent batch of nominees -- and I'm proud to be a member of the organization that chose them. Four of the five best picture nominees are in my top ten list for the year (and the fifth, "Moonrise Kingdom," is amongst my honorable mentions). There's not a bad movie in the bunch amongst the nominees for Best Documentary and Best Film Not in the English Language. My favorite movie of the year, "Holy Motors," picked up four nominations -- Best Picture, Director (Leos Carax), Actor (Denis Lavant), and Film Not in the English Language -- as many as I've seen from any critics group. I may not be satisfied with the eventual winners (and I suspect in most categories I won't be) but I'm very happy with the movies OFCSers had to choose from.

Next, the full membership votes on the nominees (I already submitted my ballot; if you've read my top ten, you can probably guess most of my picks). The final winners will be announced on January 7th. The complete list of nominees is below.
