"The Master."

The Village Voice Film Critics' Poll -- the alternative weekly alternative to our own Indiewire Critics Poll -- announced its 2012 winners today. 86 critics (including yours truly) voted and declared Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" the Best Film of the year. Indiewire's 204 critics preferred "Holy Motors," but only slightly -- "The Master" was our poll's #2 film of the year. Voice critics ranked "Holy Motors" #3 behind "Zero Dark Thirty," Indiewire critics' #2. In other words: though they disagree about the order, both major nationwide film critic polls agree on the top three movies of 2012.

In fact, while the rankings vary, the two polls' actually agree on nine out of the top ten movies of 2012. The only top tenner from Indiewire missing from the Voice's best-of list: Benh Zeitlin's somewhat divisive "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which ranked seventh on Indiewire's list but just thirteenth on the Voice's. Its spot in the Voice top ten was filled by Miguel Gomes' "Tabu." At Indiewire, Gomes' film came in eleventh, so we're not talking about a huge disparity here. Surprisingly, it appears we have reached something like a consensus.

Here's the Voice poll's top ten:

1. "The Master"
2. "Zero Dark Thirty"
3. "Holy Motors"
4. "Moonrise Kingdom"
5. "This is Not a Film"
6. "Amour"
7. "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia"
8. "The Turin Horse"
9. "Lincoln"
10. "Tabu"

The full results and critics' ballots don't appear to be on VillageVoice.com yet, but you can already read Scott Foundas' analysis of the results, along with his application of former Voice critic J. Hoberman's legendary Passiondex™ formula to the winners (click over for the full explanation). Recently departed Voice critic Karina Longworth has a best films list of her own as well; her number one? What else? "The Master."

UPDATE: The full poll is now online. You can find my ballot here.

Here is the full list of films from the Village Voice poll.
They did not provide the link in the article you posted. You had to go back to the main film page and find it that way. Lovely.

Why the heck have they not posted the full lists? First you guys at Indiewire hold out and only give us the top 50 and now the VV gives us only the top 20. How have we managed in the age of the internet to start giving people less than you did over the past 10 years with poll results? Is it a lack of staff issue? Or do these publications just not care much for giving their readers full access?

THE MASTER is topping all these lists and yet it doesn't figure into most guru's Top 10 estimates for a Best Picture slot.

Given the Academy's recent predilections, this can be received as a badge of honor. Wish it were different...
