More and more films premiere on Video on Demand -- if they don't simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we're looking at "Redemption," the latest action vehicle for Jason Statham -- not an adaptation of the popular Western video game for PS3.

Director: Steven Knight

Cast: Jason Statham, Jason Statham, Jason Statham (and others, I assume)

Synopsis: "Reeling from a traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan, Joey, an ex-Special Forces soldier, returns to London to face another kind of war: life on the streets as a damaged, homeless veteran. In an attempt to rehabilitate himself, Joey assumes another man's identity and seeks the aid of Sister Cristina, a young nun who works at an inner-city parish. But Joey's expert training as a soldier marks him as a valuable asset, and he soon finds himself caught in the dark web of London's criminal underworld. Struggling to keep hold of his integrity, Joey offers his profits to those who need it most. But when he learns his missing girlfriend was brutally murdered by a ruthless kingpin, he risks everything for bloody revenge, hurtling down a deadly path that promises to destroy him completely... or be his last and only hope at redemption."

Reviews:

Eric KohnIndiewire:

"Provides a compelling supplement to Statham's current stardom."

Peter DebrugeVariety:

"Puts an intriguing, intermittently successful spin on the sort of loner Statham so often embodies."

Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi, ShockYa:

"It’s refreshing to see the global action actor, Jason Statham, taking a role in something that’s not just a variation of the same fast-driving, taciturn, semi-romantic bruiser, we’re accustomed to seeing on screen."

Chris Bumbray, JoBlo:

"Statham's performance is quite good and shows that if he's given the chance there's more to him than just punch-ups and action."

Ben Corrigan, The Upcoming:

"The film is littered with unfortunate cliches that cheapen what could have been an engaging storyline."

"Redemption" is now available on VOD.
