John Sayles and Maggie Renzi Tribute in Queens

The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria Queens in collaboration with the North Star Fund will present a daylong tribute to John Sayles and Maggie Renzi for their seminal role in launching the American independent film movement. The program, on Saturday, May 21, will include screenings of "Matewan" (1987) and" City of Hope" (1991), directed by Sayles and produced by Renzi, and two panel discussions, exploring the current state of political filmmaking and the role of women in the film industry. Both Sayles and Renzi will appear in person to present their work and participate in the discussions.

Beginning with "Return of the Secaucus 7" (1980), John Sayles and Maggie Renzi partnered to create a definitive catalog of American independent film--financing, writing, and directing their stories on their own terms for more than 20 years. Their best known films include "Baby It's You" (1983), "Matewan" (1987), "Brother from Another Planet" (1984), "City of Hope" (1991), "Passion Fish" (1992), "Men With Guns" (1997), and more recently "Sunshine State" (2002), and "Silver City" (2004).

SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY, MAY 21:

12 p.m. Panel Discussion: Whatever Happened to Political Filmmaking? John Sayles will speak with Louis Black, co-founder and editor of The Austin Chronicles and South by Southwest film festival; professor and producer Jerry Carlson, The City College of New York; and filmmaker Mich�le Stephenson ("Faces of Change"). Moderated by Lillian Jimenez, filmmaker and executive director of the Latino Educational Media Center.

2 p.m. "Matewan" Screening
Directed by John Sayles. With Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones. With the richness and complexity of a novel, Sayles tells the story of a 1920 coal-mine strike. Introduced by Oscar winner Haskell Wexler, director of photography on Matewan.

5 p.m. Panel Discussion: Women and the Film Industry
Producer Maggie Renzi will speak with film scholar Cari Beauchamp ("Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood");actress Marianne Leone ("City of Hope," "Household Saints"); and producer Liz Manne, President of Duopoly, an independent film and television production company. Moderated by Michelle Materre, Media consultant and core faculty member of Media Studies at The New School.

6:30 p.m. "City of Hope" Screening
Directed by John Sayles. With Vincent Spano, Tony Lo Bianco, Joe Morton, Todd Graff, Angela Bassett. Set in the fictional New Jersey metropolis of Hudson, three intricately interwoven tales involving real estate, robbery, and racial tension comprise a complex study of crime, corruption, and political machinery.
