Sundance Film Festival call for entries deadline updates

Sundance Deadlines: U.S. and international short films deadline is September 3
U.S. feature films, documentaries and international feature films deadline is September 24.

AMERICAN FILM COMPETITION:

American films to be eligible for the Documentary and Dramatic competition must be world premieres.

New WORLD CINEMA COMPETITION:

There is a new jury competition for international films (any film made outside of the US). Films will compete in two categories, World Cinema and World Cinema-documentaries. These international films must only be a US premiere to qualify, but special priority will be given to world premieres.

The 5th Annual New York International Latino Film Festival

The New York International Latino Film Festival, presented by HBO and supported by the New York City Latin Media and Entertainment Commission, will run from July 27 - August 1 and screen more than 60 films. The U.S. premiere of "Imagining Argentina," starring Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson, will open the festival on the 27th. Other films include Sergio Arau's "A Day Without A Mexican" and Marisol Torres's "Boricua" which will close out the festival. Most films will be screened at Florence Gould Hall on 55 East 59th Street off Park Avenue and at the Lighthouse on 111 East 59th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues. Extended Submission Deadline: Slamdance Screenplay Competition

The 2004 Slamdance Screenplay Competition has extended its submission deadline for scripts to July 1st. The festival is held in January each year in Los Angeles, CA. Entry fees range from $50 to $120. See the Slamdance website for more information.

PSU and Northwest Film Center's Lecture Series

The Portland State University Film Committee, in collaboration with the Northwest Film Center, will host an evening lecture series at the Fifth Avenue Cinema, 525 SW Hall Street, on the PSU campus in Portland, OR, every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. from July 10 to September 11. Guest filmmakers include Matt McCormick, Bushra Azzouz, Enie Vaisburd, and Sarah Marcus, who will screen and discuss their works. Admission is $3 for PSU students and $5 for general public. BAVC's 10th Biannual James D. Phelan Art Award in Video

"The Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is accepting submissions to compete for the 10th biannual James D. Phelan Art Award in Video, sponsored by The San Francisco Foundation. A total of $7500 in cash will be shared by two video artists who were born in California and whose body of work "merits recognition for its creativity, innovation, and contribution to the field of video." Applications are being accepted now. Entry forms, video and supplementary materials must be postmarked no later than Monday July 12, 2004. Maurice Pialat Retrospective

During a three-week period in July, the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater in New York City will present a complete retrospective of the work of French director Maurice Pialat (July 9 –12 and July 19 – 29). "Every Man for Himself: The Films of Maurice Pialat" will showcase 10 features, a TV mini-series, and several shorts. Many of these works will be screened in new prints made specifically for the series by Gaumont. Films being screened include "Naked Childhood," "We Will Not Grow Old Together," "The Human Eye," and "The House in the Woods," among others. Go here for more information.

Special Advance Screening of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster"

The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, in cooperation with IFC Films, will present a special advance screening of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" on Tuesday, July 6 at 8:15 p.m. The film will be released in theaters Friday, July 9. Directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky will conduct a Q&A following the film. Check out the Lincoln Center site for additional information.

The 11th Edition of the New York Video Festival

The 11th edition of the New York Video Festival, hosted by the Lincoln Film Society's Walter Reade Theater, starts Wednesday, July 14 and runs until the 18th. The festival, a showcase for cutting-edge video, is organized into 14 programs featuring over 100 works from 17 countries. This year there will be greater emphasis on the world of web-based and video game work. Cinequest Film Festival: Call For Entries

Cinequest Film Festival, held in San Jose, CA from March 2 - 13, is now accepting submissions of features and short films. The submission deadline for shorts is October 8, 2004 and October 29, 2004 for features. Early submissions are encouraged. Discounted entry rate is $35. The late deadline is November 12, 2004. Call for Entries: Mobile Exposure

Mobile Exposure, an international exhibition of mobile video has made a call for submissions. The project, presented by Microcinema International, is interested in what special opportunities mobile phone video has presented to artists and filmmakers. The project is interested in short films and essays addressing the issue of how these new technologies may change the art of film. More information can be found here.

Call For Entries: San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival

The 23rd annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival is now accepting submissions. The festival will take place March 10 - 20, 2005. The festival accepts films and videos of all lengths and genres that are made by and/or about Asian Pacific Americans and Asians or Pacific Islanders of any nationality. MoMA Contemporary Brazilian Films at Film Forum

The Museum of Modern Art presents its second annual exhibition of contemporary Brazilian cinema - "Premiere Brazil" - June 23 - 29. The 11 film exhibition includes the world premiere of Joel Zito Araujo’s "Filhas do Vento" ("Daughters of the Wind") and finishes off with "O Pagador de Promessas" ("The Given Word"), which won the Palme D’Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival. The exhibition is presented at Film Forum on 209 West Houston Street in Manhattan. Admission is $5 for Film Forum members and children under 12 and $10 for the general public. Call for Entries: Global Peace Film Festival

The 2nd Annual Global Peace Film Festival, held from November 16 - 21 in Orlando, Florida, has announced a call for entries. The GPFF is seeking narrative feature films, feature length documentaries and short films (narrative and documentary) on the issues of: global peace, conflict resolution, peace activism, environmental peace, providing safe environments for children and families, community mediation, and socio-economic peace. There will be a juried competition with prizes awarded. Submission fees vary from $10 to $25. Submissions must be postmarked by August 9, 2004. Submission forms are available at their web site.

The 13th Annual Brouhaha Film and Video Showcase

The thirteenth annual Brouhaha Film and Video Showcase will be held June 12 - 13 at the Enzian Theater in Maitland, Florida. The festival is an annual event celebrating Florida's finest independent film and video makers. The films range from narratives and animation to experimental. Programs will run at noon and 2:15 p.m. each day. Tickets for each program are $5 for the general public and free to Enzian Film Society Members. Call for Entries: Northwest Film and Video Festival

The 31st Northwest Film & Video festival has requested submissions from any filmmakers residing in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and British Columbia. Participating filmmakers will be eligible for over $15,000 worth of Production Service awards and the selected films will screen November 5th through the 13th at the 31st Northwest Film & Video Festival at the Guild Theatre in Portland. Call for Entries: Chamberlain Bros. Student Film Festival Project

In the Spring of 2005, Chamberlain Bros., an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), will launch its inaugural student film festival with a book and DVD set featuring the work of 5-7 young filmmakers. Selected filmmakers will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

All entries must include a DVD or VHS transfer of the submitted film along with a two-page biography of the student filmmaker, and must be received by July 1, 2004. "Cine Mexico" at Film Forum

In New York, the Film Forum will host "Cine Mexico" from July 2-22, a three week series including 26 films and covering eight decades. The scope of the series ranges from silent rarities to 1940s “Golden Age” classics to popular contemporary films, many of which will be shown on new 35mm prints. More information can be found here.

Moving Image Preview Screenings and Pinewood Dialogues

In June, the American Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York will present three special events accompanied with preview screenings of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," "The Door in the Floor," and Richard Linklater's new film "Before Sunset." Joe Berlinger, Bruce Sinofsky, Tod Williams, Richard Linklater, John Irving, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy will all be part of the Pinewood Dialogues moderated by David Schwartz, the museum's chief curator of film. IFP/Chicago Facets Film Series Presents "Control Room"

IFP/Chicago Facets Film Series will have a special screening of the Al-Jazeera documentary "Control Room" at 7 p.m. at the Facets Multi Media building at 1517 W. Fullerton. The screening will be preceded by a workshop with the film's director Jehane Noujaim at 5:30 p.m. The screening is free to IFP members plus guest and $5 for all others. Hamptons International Film Festival extends deadlines

The Hamptons International Film Fesival is still accepting entries for feature length fiction (70 minutes and over), documentaries (50 minutes and over) and short films (under 40 minutes). Fees for features and documentaries are $75 during the final application window (Deadline July 1st). Fees for short entries are $50 during the final application window (Deadline July 1st). Juried awards include the Golden Starfish Award for Fiction Feature ($180,000 in-kind goods and services), documentary ($10,000 cash/in-kind) and short film ($5,000). Other awards include the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize in Science and Technology ($25,000), The Kodak Award for Best Cinematographer ($6,000 in-kind), the Zicherman Family Foundation Award for Best Screenwriter ($5,000), the Brizzolara Family Inspirational Film Award ($5,000) and the Artbridge Best Original Score Award ($3,500). Woodstock Film Festival final call for entries

The Woodstock Film Festival's final date for entries is approaching fast. Woodstock will take place October 13 - 17 in the famed Catskills town and other surrounding communities. Awards will be presented for best feature, best documentary, best short documentary, best short film, best student film, best cinematography, best film score, and best animation. Final Call for Entries: Third Annual San Diego Film Festival

The deadline for submissions for the Third Annual San Diego Film Festival is July 1st. The festival is looking for the best in American and international narrative features, documentaries and short films, as well as a new category for screenplays. Dances With Films Film Festival

Dances With Films, which takes place June 10th through the 16th in Santa Monica, CA, is the only film festival in the United States which solely presents unknowns, stipulating that all competition films have no known directors, actors, or producers. AFI at ArcLight's Third Annual Music Documentary Series

AFI at ArcLight's Third Annual Music Documentary Series returns for six Wednesdays from June 16 - July 21. Films include "This is Spinal Tap," "Nobody Knows How to Talk to Children" (featuring The White Stripes), "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, Sleeping, Eating, Waiting, and Playing" (featuring Air), and "The Clash: Westway to the World." Backup began in the European Cultural Capital Year 1999 and has reached a level that secures it a respectable place among the European festivals.
