American Cinematheque to Fete Spanish Director Bigas Luna
The American Cinematheque presents "Golden Balls: A Tribute to Spanish Director Bigas Luna" at the Egyptian (May 20 - May 22) and Aero Theatres. Drawn from his seemingly inexhaustible passion for sex, food and his native Catalunya, the films of legendary Spanish director Bigas Luna literally overflow with symbolist and surrealist images. Everything is oversized in Luna's universe, from women's breasts to male egos. A popular and controversial filmmaker in Spain since the late 70s, Luna's "Jamon Jamon" (1991) starring a young Javier Bardem ("Before Night Falls") and Penelope Cruz ("Vanilla Sky," "Don't Move") finally brough him to the attention of American audiences. The series featured the nearly impossible to see "Poodle" (1979), a shocking portrait of an incestuous pair of siblings and their dog. Plus the LA Premiere of "Sound of the Sea" (2001) starring Leonor Watling ("Talk to Her"). For more information, visit the American Cinematheque website. May 05, 2005
