American Cinematheque to Fete Spanish Director Bigas Luna
The American Cinematheque presents "Golden Balls: A Tribute to Spanish Director Bigas Luna" at the Egyptian (May 20 - May 22) and Aero Theatres. Drawn from his seemingly inexhaustible passion for sex, food and his native Catalunya, the films of legendary Spanish director Bigas Luna literally overflow with symbolist and surrealist images. Everything is oversized in Luna's universe, from women's breasts to male egos. A popular and controversial filmmaker in Spain since the late 70s, Luna's "Jamon Jamon" (1991) starring a young Javier Bardem ("Before Night Falls") and Penelope Cruz ("Vanilla Sky," "Don't Move") finally brough him to the attention of American audiences. The series featured the nearly impossible to see "Poodle" (1979), a shocking portrait of an incestuous pair of siblings and their dog. Plus the LA Premiere of "Sound of the Sea" (2001) starring Leonor Watling ("Talk to Her"). For more information, visit the American Cinematheque website. May 03, 2005

THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE PRESENTS February 22, 2005
"Emile" opens Feb. 4
Emile is the poignant exploration of an older man’s struggle to reconnect with his past. From the director of Johnny (1999) and Lola (2001) comes the third chapter of films dealing with a character’s search for identity at a critical point in life. This marks Bessai’s third feature film on which he served as writer/director/producer/ and cinematographer. The cast includes Tygh Runyan, Chris William Martin, and Ian Tracey. When Emile (Ian McKellen) is given the opportunity to travel from England to Victoria on Canada’s west coast to receive an honorary degree at the university, he goes knowing that it might be his last chance to reconnect with his only living relatives. His niece Nadia (Deborah Kara Unger) and her daughter Maria (Theo Crane) hold the key to Emile’s tragic past and the guilt, which has taunted him his entire life. The film starts to develop along two paths; in the present Emile struggles to connect with his estranged family, and in the past he plays back his memories of leaving the farm where he grew up with his two brothers. As the past weaves together with the present, the film artfully and touchingly reveals a portrait of one man’s redemption. NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL KICKS OFF 7TH YEAR
