Depeche Mode, Rivers Cuomo & Celibacy, eMusic, Death Cab for Cutie
Week of December 19 - 23
Some weekly moments in electronic form... And Merry Christmas!
"A Pain That I'm Used To"
To be honest, I was never a big Depeche Mode fan. I was only into them so I can seem cool to my classmates in high school. The only one I truly owned was Violator and to me that was enough. But recently, Depeche Mode released remixes of their song "A Pain That I'm Used To"
and one of the remixes was done by Goldfrapp. Naturally, I checked it out. I listened to all the remixes for this song by other artists and honestly, I prefer the Goldfrapp remix. Sure I'm saying that as a fan, but when you listen to the other remixes, you tell me if they are better than the one Goldfrapp made. I dare you. BTW - the "Halo" Goldfrapp remix wasn't as good as this one is. Really.
Rivers Cuomo Past His Celibacy Deadline
It's cool to stay celibate. Just ask Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. He's been doing it for two and a half years, so he tells Blender magazine. If anything, now I know he doesn't "wack discepwine".
eMusic Reaches One Million Download Milestone
The one millionth download was The Pixies' live version of "Here Comes Your Man". Not a big deal...until you read that one of the first legally downloaded songs from eMusic's site was from Frank Black's side project, Frank Black and the Catholics. Cue the Twilight Zone theme music.
I will bet you anything that eMusic made sure their system had a Frank Black tune ready to upload once it reached one million. I mean, c'mon...too much of a cowinkidink. It's a stunt!

Death Cab for Cutie "Directions"
I like Death Cab for Cutie. Not only for their music, but their approach to all things collaborative. Here's an example: the 12 songs off of their latest Plans cd each have their own video. That's right. 12 different videos from 12 different directors. The 12 shorts make up the project called Directions. "It's our hope that this project serves as a model to both labels and bands as a way to grant the directors the type and amount of freedom we've enjoyed in the creation of the music itself," frontman Ben Gibbard said in a statement. Each video will be unveiled one by one on the band's website. How cool is that?
